Two years ago, international journalists recognized Peles Castle, along with Corvin Castle in Hunedoara, as one of Europe’s most spectacular structures. It stands as a key attraction in the Prahova Valley, offering visitors breathtaking views and refreshing mountain air.
Construction of the castle began in 1875, initiated by King Charles I, who was enchanted by the area’s beauty during his first visit to Sinaia. The strategic location of Peles Castle in the Prahova Valley was no coincidence, as Predeal once marked the border between Romania and Austria-Hungary.
Remarkably, Peles was the first castle in Europe to be electrified, thanks to a nearby power plant.
- Unirea Salt Mine - Situated in Slănic, Prahova County, Romania, the Slănic mine is an ancient salt mine located 100 km north of Bucharest. Although no longer used for salt extraction, it welcomes visitors to experience its unique microclimate, featuring natural air-conditioning and a consistent temperature and atmospheric pressure year-round. The mine comprises two levels, Unirea and Mihai, and is renowned for its purported health benefits due to the air’s purity. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities, including playground equipment and ping-pong tables, throughout the mine.

- Peles Castle was designated a museum in 1953. It stands as the most frequented museum in Romania, attracting over 300,000 visitors each year who come to marvel at this unique site in the Carpathian Mountains.
Peles Castle boasts a total of 170 rooms and 30 bathrooms, though only 35% of the castle is accessible to the public. Visitors should not miss the hall of honor, reception hall, hall of mirrors, great hall of arms, concert hall, imperial apartment, Moor room, Turkish room, or the theater. Additionally, the royal library captivates travelers with its rare books, featuring covers engraved with golden letters, and a secret door hidden behind a shelf.
- Since 1970, the mine has been a tourist attraction, offering outstanding natural conditions due to its microclimate, which is rich in aerosols. Some believe these conditions are beneficial for treating respiratory diseases.
