This 5.5-hour food tour includes over 10 tastings and explores the districts of Katong, Old Airport Road, Kampong Glam, and Little India. Opt for a tour with hotel pickup, and it extends to 6 hours, with your guide meeting you in the hotel lobby and accompanying you by taxi to the first culinary stop.
The journey begins in Singapore’s East Coast Area, known as Katong, where you’ll learn about the early Chinese immigrants. While the focus is on food, you’ll also hear about their occupations, lifestyles, and marriages. The unique Peranakan culture emerged from the unions between Chinese immigrants and Malay women.
The tour kicks off with a taste of Singapore’s beloved foods with Chinese and Peranakan roots, including Kaya Toast and Kopi, Bak Chang (rice dumplings), and Laksa.
From the East Coast, you’ll take a public bus to the Old Airport Road Hawker Centre, a favorite among Singaporeans for its many ‘hawker legends.’ Here, you’ll sample two of three quintessential Singaporean dishes: Hokkien Mee, Rojak, and Carrot Cake.
Next, a short 10-minute bus ride brings you to Kampong Glam, the heart of Singapore’s Malay community and home to the magnificent Sultan’s Mosque. You’ll delve into the district’s history, the Sultan’s role in modern Singapore’s founding, and savor popular local foods from Malay, Arabic, and Indonesian communities.
The final stop is Little India, where you’ll discover why the Indian community settled in this area and how it evolved over time. You’ll enjoy popular savory Indian dishes, concluding with Indian sweets and Masala Milk.
Throughout the tour, you’ll uncover the stories and histories behind the foods and the eateries where you enjoy them. This tour offers a comprehensive understanding of what it means to ‘eat like a local’ and how Singapore’s iconic dishes became integral to its culture.
The tour concludes in Little India, where your guide will arrange a taxi back to your hotel, or you can continue exploring on your own.
