Rain or Shine: A Family Adventure in Sintra and Cascais

As a family travel writer, I was drawn to the allure of Sintra and Cascais, eager to explore the historic sites and stunning landscapes with my kids. Our day trip promised a blend of guided tours and free time, perfect for a family adventure.

A Rainy Day Adventure in Sintra

Our day began with a short drive from Lisbon, and as we arrived in Sintra, the skies were overcast, hinting at the rain that would accompany us throughout the day. Our guide, Ruben, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing fascinating stories about the region’s history as we made our way to our first stop, Casa do Preto. This charming little café was the perfect place to start our adventure, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere where we could enjoy a traditional Portuguese breakfast. The kids were thrilled with the selection of pastries, and I couldn’t resist trying the famous “Travesseiro,” a sweet treat that lived up to its reputation.

With our appetites satisfied, we headed to the iconic Pena Palace. The drive up the winding roads was an adventure in itself, and the kids were captivated by the lush greenery and misty views. Despite the rain, the palace was a sight to behold, its vibrant colors standing out against the gray sky. Ruben’s detailed explanations brought the history of the palace to life, and we were grateful for his guidance as we navigated the palace grounds. The self-guided tour of the interior was a highlight, with each room offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the past. The kids were particularly fascinated by the furnishings and artifacts, and the educational signs provided a great learning opportunity.

Exploring Sintra and Cabo da Roca

After our visit to Pena Palace, we made our way down to the town center of Sintra. The free time allowed us to explore at our own pace, and we decided to visit the Quinta da Regaleira. The walk was a bit steep, but the kids were troopers, and the promise of exploring the mysterious gardens kept them motivated. Regaleira was a magical place, with its enchanting gardens, hidden tunnels, and intriguing architecture. It was easy to see why it was a favorite stop for many visitors, and we could have easily spent the entire day there.

As the rain began to fall again, we regrouped with Ruben and the rest of our small tour group. Our next destination was Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe. The wind was fierce, and the rain was relentless, but the dramatic views were worth braving the elements. The kids enjoyed the thrill of standing at the edge of the continent, and we managed to capture some memorable photos before retreating to the warmth of the van.

A Cozy Afternoon in Cascais

Our final stop was the charming town of Cascais, where we had more free time to explore. The kids and I decided to visit the Parque Marechal Carmona, a lovely park that offered a welcome respite from the rain. The park’s playground was a hit with the little ones, and I appreciated the opportunity to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings. We also made a quick visit to the Castro Guimarães Museum, where the kids were intrigued by the exhibits and the history of the area.

As the afternoon wore on, the storm clouds began to gather once more, and we made our way back to the van just as the rain began to pour. Despite the weather, our day in Sintra and Cascais was a memorable adventure, filled with history, exploration, and family fun. The balance of guided tours and free time made it an ideal experience for families, and I highly recommend this day trip for anyone visiting Lisbon, especially during the off-season when the crowds are smaller and the experience feels more intimate.
