- Centro Historico de Sintra - A picturesque town nestled at the base of the mountain range sharing its name, its distinct characteristics have earned it a UNESCO World Heritage designation. A special category, “cultural landscape,” was created to recognize both its natural beauty and historic architecture. The lush vegetation of the mountains forms part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
- Ericeira - Once a traditional fishing village, Ericeira saw significant growth in the 20th century as it became a popular summer destination. Despite this development, it has retained its unique charm and atmosphere.
Visiting Ericeira is a great chance to savor regional cuisine, especially its renowned shellfish and fresh fish dishes.
- Palacio Nacional de Mafra - The grand architectural design of the palace, convent, and basilica of Mafra reflects the lavishness of King John V’s court (1707-1750). Commissioned by King John V, this landmark epitomizes the Portuguese Baroque era, with designs by Frederico Ludovice inspired by Italian styles.
Serving as the royal family’s summer residence, the Palace houses various collections of works by Portuguese, Italian, and French artists, including Baroque paintings, sculptures, religious vestments, and murals by prominent Portuguese artists like Cyrillo Volkmar Machado and Domingos Dry.
The Basilica features a unique set of six organs and two carillons with a total of 114 bells, the largest of their kind globally, made in Antwerp in the 18th century.
The Rocaille Library, located in the eastern wing of the Convent of Mafra, is a must-see. Spanning an 83-meter main room, it is the most significant monastic-royal library of 18th century Portugal. The library’s 40,000 volumes from the 18th and 19th centuries were meticulously organized by monks from the Convent of Arrabida, with a catalog listing all books acquired up to 1819. This collection includes rare books from the 16th to 18th centuries, 22 foreign incunabula, and 41 maps.
- Aldeia Museu Jose Franco - Near Mafra, you can explore a life-sized clay village representing the “saloio” region of Lisbon, crafted by Portuguese sculptor José Franco.
In the village of Cork Oak, close to Mafra, José Franco dedicated his life to clay modeling, creating a perfect life-sized village with shops, houses, a windmill, butcher’s shop, water-mill, blacksmith’s forge, threshing floor, tavern, carpenter’s workshop, and more. This village offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life in Mafra, showcasing trades and crafts that have faded over time.
The village tells the authentic story of the region and captivates travelers of all ages. Additionally, you can view a permanent exhibition of José Franco’s ceramic works in the same space.
