- Sintra Railway Station - Two hours before sunset, participants will be picked up by car at Sintra’s train station. On the way to the starting point of the evening walk, they will catch glimpses of Sintra’s Castle, Pena Palace, and the forest gradually enveloping them.
- Sintra Mountains - Upon reaching the western part of the Sintra Mountains, the walk will commence, guided by the insights of a Historian, taking participants on a journey to a distant past.
The walk covers approximately 5 kilometers over about 4 hours, traversing mostly regular and gently uneven terrain. The effort required is akin to spending an entire afternoon exploring Sintra, with its natural ups and downs.
While typical nocturnal walks reveal the foliage and arches that define the ancient history of the Mountain and Village, in “Sintra Mountains Inbetween Wolves,” participants will journey under the vast night sky, adorned with countless stars, to a past that is difficult to imagine.
Before this, participants will witness the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean, with Cabo da Roca visible if the skies are clear. After sunset, the group will enter the forest, a particularly special segment of the walk, where they will experience the atmosphere as ancestors did, crossing the mountain in the dark on their way home. The terrain is mostly uneven, but manageable for those without mobility impairments.
Emerging from the past, the rustling foliage signals the wind where the Light Hawk and Bonelli Eagle hide; from this same foliage, the Bubo Bubo takes flight, seeking a glimpse of a running hare or a careless pigeon in the night.
Amid the stream’s sounds, the fox stealthily moves, and the Three-Toed Skink attempts to evade a snake by concealing its small paws.
In the past, wolves, deer, and wild boars roamed these paths. Wild shepherds and friars, with their unique experiences and unexpected encounters, live on through words etched in time, preserving the desire to understand and protect this secluded forest culture. This culture is revived in “Sintra Mountains Inbetween Wolves,” as the silence allows the heart to see the lives of the past and the emotions of the present.
Participants will hear stories and memories from the past, gaining insight into life in the mountains, particularly regarding religious orders and the unusual tales from centuries-old history.
There may be opportunities to observe traces of the fauna that still inhabit the Sintra Mountains at night.
- Sintra Railway Station - At the end, participants will carry the memory of entering a serene forest at night, filled with tales from the past. They will be transported back to Sintra’s train station, where the journey began.
