The Olive Oil Odyssey

As I embarked on the Cretan Olive Oil & Wine: Local Tasting Experience, I was filled with anticipation. The allure of Skalani, with its rich tapestry of history and tradition, beckoned me. Our guide, Soto, met us with a warm smile at the cruise port, setting the tone for a day steeped in cultural discovery. Our first destination was the Kleanthi Olive Farm, a place where the past and present of olive oil production converge.

Upon arrival, we were greeted not only by the friendly staff but also by a few curious resident cats, adding a touch of homely charm to the experience. The olive oil tasting was a revelation. A beautiful platter of local breads and pairings was laid out before us, each bite a testament to the region’s culinary heritage. As we toured the grounds, the staff shared insights into the meticulous process of olive oil production, both ancient and modern. Our journey continued to the Stilianou Winery, a family-owned gem nestled amidst the Cretan landscape. The Theon Dora white stood out to me, its crisp and refreshing notes a perfect reflection of the Cretan sun. It was a moment of connection, not just with the land, but with the generations of winemakers who have poured their heart and soul into their craft.

Our final stop was a raki distillery, a place where the spirit of Crete is distilled into every drop. Run by two brothers, the distillery exuded a sense of familial warmth and pride. Despite the language barrier, the hospitality was palpable, and we were welcomed with a generous spread of traditional Cretan snacks to accompany our tasting.

While raki may not be my drink of choice, the experience was invaluable. Watching the process of barreling and fermenting raki was like witnessing a dance between past and future, a testament to the enduring spirit of Cretan culture.
