• Ancient Theatre of Ohrid - Situated at the base of the eastern slope of the higher Ohrid hill, beneath Samuel’s Fortress, the Ancient Theater in Ohrid was constructed between two hills, providing natural protection from winds and resulting in exceptional acoustics. Its remarkable acoustics make it a prime venue for the Ohrid Summer Festival.
• Church of Holy Mary Peryvleptos - The frescoes in this church are among the earliest works by renowned medieval artists Michael and Eutychios. Their dramatic expressiveness laid the foundation for a new trend in Byzantine art known as “The Renaissance of the Paleologues,” marking the final chapter of Byzantine art.
• Tsar Samuel’s Fortress - This medieval fortress still stands today, overlooking the town and Lake Ohrid.
• Plaoshnik - The archaeological site of Plaoshnik houses the complex of St. Panteleimon Church and St. Clement of Ohrid, where St. Clement, the creator of the Cyrillic alphabet, was laid to rest. This site was pivotal in the spread of Christianity in the region.
• St. Jovan Kaneo - Perched on a cliff above the Lake of Ohrid, overlooking the fishing village of Kaneo, this church is a prominent landmark of old Ohrid and a beloved symbol of the city. Its architecture blends Byzantine and Armenian styles.
• Church of Saint Sophia - Dedicated to Holy Wisdom, this church was built in the 9th century on the foundations of a 5th-century early Christian basilica. It served as the cathedral church during Tzar Samoil’s reign and was the central church of the Tzar Samoil patriarchy. The church, as seen today, was renovated and adorned with frescoes during the time of Archbishop Leo, between 1037 and 1056.
