Prambanan Temples - Discover the stunning Hindu temple of Prambanan. Constructed in the tenth century, it stands as the largest temple complex dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia. Admire the three temples adorned with reliefs depicting the epic Ramayana, dedicated to the three great Hindu deities (Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma), along with three temples devoted to the animals that serve them.
All the reliefs at Prambanan Temple narrate the Ramayana stories. The tale begins in Dandaka Forest, where Rahwana (a giant) kidnaps Shinta and takes her to Alengka. To rescue Shinta, Rama is aided by Hanoman and the monkey forces, who construct a bridge to the kingdom of Alengka to free her. A great battle ensues between the kingdoms of Alengka and Ayodya, with the ape forces battling the giants defending Alengka in the quest to reclaim Shinta. -
Sukuh Temple - Delve into the fascinating and controversial temples located on the slopes of Lawu Mountain, in the Karanganyar Region of Central Java. Visit Cetho and Sukuh Temples. Depart from your accommodation in Yogyakarta and travel for three hours to reach Cetho and Sukuh Temples. As you pass by the slopes of Mount Lawu, enjoy the breathtaking views of the vast tea plantations and rice fields set against the backdrop of hills and towering mountains.
The Sukuh Temple, resembling a pyramid, does not adhere to the Hindu architecture of Wastu Vidya as it was constructed after the decline of Hinduism. One theory suggests it represents a mountain.
The reliefs at Sukuh Temple depict parts of the MAHABHARATA story. Other statues in Candi Sukuh include a life-sized male figure holding his own penis and three flattened tortoise shells. In Hindu mythology, the tortoise symbolizes the foundation or support of the world and is an avatar of Vishnu.
- Cetho Temple - Cetho is among several temples built on the northwest slopes of Mount Lawu in the fifteenth century. By this period, Javanese religion and art had diverged from the Indian influences that had shaped temple styles during the 8th-10th centuries. This area was the last significant site of temple construction in Java before the island’s courts converted to Islam in the 16th century. The temples’ uniqueness and the scarcity of records on Javanese ceremonies and beliefs from that era make it challenging for historians to interpret the significance of these ancient structures.
