Exploring Can Det: A Family Adventure in Mallorca’s Olive Oil Heritage
In search of the legendary “Olivo Millenario,” our family embarked on a journey to Can Det in Sóller. This UNESCO Heritage Olive Oil Factory promised a blend of history, culture, and adventure, perfect for a family outing.
A Journey Through Time: Discovering Can Det
Our family adventure to Sóller was inspired by a quest to uncover the secrets of the ancient olive trees, known as “Olivo Millenario.” As a family travel writer, I am always on the lookout for experiences that blend education with fun, and the Can Det Tasting Tour seemed like the perfect opportunity. Nestled in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Can Det offers a glimpse into the rich cultural landscape of Mallorca.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm and welcoming Ann, who guided us through the historic 16th-century house and its beautiful gardens. The kids were fascinated by the traditional oil production system, even though we visited during a time when production was not in full swing. Ann explained that the olive oil production begins when the olives are ripe, around the end of October. Despite this, the tour was engaging, and the audiovisual presentation provided a vivid insight into the process.
A Taste of Mallorca
The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the olive oil tasting. As a family, we love exploring local flavors, and the Can Det experience did not disappoint. The olive oil, often referred to as “liquid gold,” was a revelation. The kids enjoyed comparing it to the oils we usually buy at home, noting the distinct richness and flavor.
The tasting was a delightful spread of Majorcan bread, ham, cheese, salami, and tomatoes, accompanied by local wine, freshly squeezed orange juice, and water. For dessert, we savored roasted almonds, almond cake, and bread with homemade orange jam. It was a feast for the senses, and we couldn’t resist taking some olive oil home as a souvenir.
The Adventure Continues
After the tasting, Tomeu, another friendly guide, shared directions to the ancient olive tree, a sight we were eager to see. Although this part of the journey was not included in the tour, it added an element of adventure that the kids loved. Navigating the narrow roads was a bit of a challenge, but it was all part of the fun.
Reaching the millennial olive tree was a rewarding experience. The kids were in awe of its age and size, and the view from the top was breathtaking. It was a perfect way to end our day, and the adventure left us with memories that we will cherish forever.
Our visit to Can Det was a highlight of our trip to Mallorca. It offered a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure that was both educational and enjoyable for the whole family. I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting the area, especially families looking to create lasting memories together.
