Enjoy a scenic 2-hour drive on a modern highway that traces the ancient route connecting the Silk Road to Rome. Upon arrival in Sofia, the tour proceeds to the historical center. After parking, embark on a 3-hour walking tour of the city. Visit the Sofia History Museum to learn about the 20th-century monarchy period when Sofia became the nation’s capital. Discover the Roman city of Serdica by exploring the Roman ruins, St. Sofia Church, and the Rotunda of St. George. • National Museum of History - After exploring ancient Sofia’s center, the tour continues to the outskirts to visit the main Communist residence, now home to the National History Museum. The museum’s collections cover over 13,000 years, from early civilizations to the Ottoman Empire and modern Bulgaria. Visitors are welcomed by ancient Thracian artifacts, including exquisite gold jewelry from the renowned Panagyurishte Treasure. Built in the late 10th century, it is famous for its 13th-century frescoes depicting saints’ lives and portraits of Bulgarian nobles and church dignitaries. The church’s architecture blends Byzantine and Bulgarian styles, with an interior divided into three distinct parts. The nave features columns and a ribbed ceiling, while the apse’s semi-dome is adorned with intricate frescoes. The narthex, or entrance area, is also decorated with frescoes, bridging the secular and religious realms.

• The Bells (Kambanite) - The final stop before returning to Plovdiv is the intriguing and significant monument from the Communist era, park “The Bells.” Constructed in 1979 by the daughter of Bulgaria’s last Communist leader, it was part of the “Flag of Peace” initiative. Children from both sides of the Iron Curtain met and created bells, which are displayed in the park.
