The journey starts with a picturesque two-hour drive through the beautiful mountain scenery to Rila Monastery, the largest and most significant Bulgarian monastery, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nestled among the dramatic peaks of the Rila Mountains, the monastery captivates visitors with its striking striped arcades, vibrant frescoes, and remarkable architecture.

If the guided option is selected, enjoy a 40-minute guided tour of the monastery complex. Discover the life of Saint John of Rila (Saint Ivan Rilski), the monastery’s founding in the 10th century, and its evolution over the centuries. The guide will explain the symbolism of the most important frescoes, introduce the miraculous icons inside the main church, and share the story of the saint’s relics.

After the guided tour, there is additional free time to explore the monastery courtyard, browse souvenir shops, and enjoy a lunch break. Dining options near the monastery are limited, so bringing food from Sofia is recommended.
