• Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for all major public buildings related to city administration, justice, business, trade activities like markets, and the main sites for citizen worship.
• Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter stands prominently on the north side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius rising majestically behind it. When the colony was established (80 BC), the temple underwent significant renovation, transforming into a true Capitolium with three cult statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, resembling those of the Capitolium in Rome, placed on a high base for visibility to all in the Forum square.
• Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side, aligned with the entrance. Copies of two marble statues, a female and a male armed figure, are located in the niches of the side wall, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely representing an emperor, Titus or Vespasian, indicating the area’s dedication to the imperial cult. To the left is a room for sacred board meetings, and to the right, a large room with a masonry counter, possibly for selling fish.
• Via dell’Abbondanza - Via dell’Abbondanza was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, stretching across the city from the Forum to Porta Sarno in an east/west direction. In ancient times, the street was bustling and lively with numerous shops, workshops (“officinae”), cafes, snack-bars, and restaurants offering food and drink.
• Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, the Forum Baths date back to the years following the founding of the veteran colony by General Silla (80 BC). Separate entrances were provided for women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section includes an apodyterium (dressing room), also used as a tepidarium (medium temperature baths), frigidarium (cold baths), and calidarium (hot baths). Like many structures in Pompeii, the baths suffered significant damage during the earthquake of 62 AD.
• Lupanar - The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most renowned brothel in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, notable for its erotic wall paintings. Lupanar is Latin for “brothel.” The Pompeii lupanar is also referred to as Lupanare Grande. The brothel’s prostitutes were primarily Greek and Oriental slaves, who charged between two and eight Asses (a glass of wine cost one As) for their services.
• Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most opulent private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture with Hellenistic influences. It is renowned for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, depicting the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia.
