• Pompeii Archaeological Park - Located in southern Italy’s Campania region near the Bay of Naples, Pompeii is an expansive archaeological site. Once a flourishing Roman city, it was buried under layers of ash and pumice following Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 A.D. Visitors can explore the preserved ruins of streets and houses.
• Forum - The Civil Forum was the heart of daily life in the city, serving as the center for public buildings related to city administration, justice, business, trade, and citizen worship.
• Tempio di Giove Capitolino - The Temple of Jupiter stands prominently on the north side of the Forum, with Mount Vesuvius as a backdrop. After the colony’s founding in 80 BC, the temple was extensively renovated to become a Capitolium, featuring statues of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, similar to those in Rome, placed on a high base for visibility.
• Macellum - The Macellum features a tuff quadriporticus with an elevated worship hall on the eastern side. Niches in the side wall hold copies of two marble statues, a female and a male warrior, along with a fragment of a larger statue, likely of an emperor, indicating the area’s dedication to the imperial cult. Adjacent rooms served for sacred meetings and possibly fish sales.
• Via dell’Abbondanza - This was the main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, running east/west from the Forum to Porta Sarno. It was bustling with shops, workshops, cafes, snack-bars, and restaurants.
• Stabian Baths (Terme Stabiane) - Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, the Forum Baths date back to the colony’s founding by General Silla in 80 BC. Separate entrances led to women’s and men’s quarters. The men’s section included an apodyterium (dressing room), tepidarium (medium temperature baths), frigidarium (cold baths), and calidarium (hot baths). The baths suffered significant damage during the 62 AD earthquake.
• Lupanar - The Lupanar is Pompeii’s most famous official brothel, situated on a narrow side street near the city center. This unique two-story stone building features five small rooms with masonry beds and is renowned for its well-preserved erotic frescoes and visitor graffiti, offering insights into the social life and language of ancient Roman plebeians. It belonged to Quintus Poppaeus Sabinus of the Poppei family, relatives of Empress Poppea Sabina, Nero’s second wife.
• Casa del Fauno - The House of the Faun is one of Pompeii’s largest and most luxurious private residences, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun in its main atrium, it showcases Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is famous for the Alexander Mosaic, depicting Alexander the Great’s battle with Darius III of Persia. With two peristyle gardens and intricate mosaics, it symbolizes the wealth and taste of the city’s elite.
