- Chapman’s Peak Drive - Chapman’s Peak Drive is a breathtaking route along the mountain’s edge, with the South Atlantic Ocean below. This remarkable roadway took seven years to construct, costing ₤20,000. It was opened to traffic on Saturday, May 6, 1922, by the Governor of the Union of South Africa, His Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught.
Chapman’s Peak is named after John Chapman, the Captain’s mate of the English ship, the Consent. The peak was not named after a governor or a brave mountaineer, but rather a humble ship’s pilot. The road was ingeniously designed with its surface based on the solid, conveniently located 540-million-year-old light grey granite of the Cape Granite Suite, on an erosional contact surface (nonconformity) overlain by sandstone and mudstone of the 485 to 455 million-year-old lower Table Mountain Group. The numerous roadside cuttings were carved from these more workable Table Mountain Group rocks.
