• Cape Agulhas Lighthouse - The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, operational since 1849, is the second-oldest working lighthouse in South Africa. It was constructed in response to numerous shipwrecks along this rugged coast, known as the “graveyard of ships.” Following the tragic wreck of the Arniston in 1815, which resulted in 372 fatalities just east of Cape Agulhas, public pressure led to its construction. The lighthouse was declared a national monument in 1973 and remains fully operational today.
