Bo-Kaap - Bo-Kaap is a residential area located in the heart of Cape Town’s city center, starting from Buitengracht Street and extending up Signal Hill, southwest of the city. Stone cobbled streets run steeply towards the mountains along rows of the famous colorful Cape Dutch-style buildings, while several mosques dominate the skyline in a unique fashion not seen elsewhere in the country. Most residents here are direct descendants of the Far Easterners and Southwest Africans who were brought to the Cape as slaves. Their distinctive culture, cuisine, and religion contribute to the vibrant diversity of South Africa’s rainbow nation. A visit to one of the traditional shops here offers a great introduction to the uniqueness of Bo-Kaap. The guide will provide a short walking tour covering important landmarks, such as the Bo-Kaap Museum, the first mosque, and the Tana Baru shrine.
-
Adderley Street - Adderley Street has long been, and continues to be, Cape Town’s most decorated street. A stroll along Adderley Street quickly reveals the attention it has received, more than any other street in Cape Town, through masonry, landscaping, or sculptures. The dual carriageway cuts through the city in a straight line, with a series of large traffic circles at 100-meter intervals. Life-size bronze sculptures of some of Cape Town’s most historic figures stand tall within these roundabouts, and halfway down the street, a fountain sprays into the air as the planted palm and fever trees sway to the tune of the southeastern winds of the Cape. A canal also runs parallel to the street and the footpath between the dual carriageways. The guide will walk with you along this path, sharing fascinating facts and stories about the beautiful Adderley Street before proceeding to the Castle of Good Hope by car.
-
Castle of Good Hope - The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest standing colonial building in South Africa, with over 350 years of history. Built in a 5-pointed star shape by the Dutch in 1666, the castle has served various purposes over the years, including as a residence during the early days of the Cape colony, a church, a prison, the headquarters of the South African army in the Western Cape, and currently, a military museum. A tour of the Castle of Good Hope provides insight into the development of Cape Town as a halfway station between Europe and India. The guide will accompany you, answering all your questions, and if you’re interested in art, you might want to return on your own to see the William Fehr collection exhibited in the governor’s quarters.
NOTICE: The guide will walk you around the castle. However, due to time constraints, there will not be time to go inside on this tour.
-
Church Square - From the Castle of Good Hope, the tour continues on foot across the Grand Parade and past the old City Hall to Church Square, where historical buildings such as the oldest church in the country, the Sir Herbert Baker-designed Mutual Heights of Australasia building, and the former Union Chapel of London surround the square. The life-size bronze sculpture of Jan Hofmeyer adds flair to the square as it stands sternly in the middle. Known as “Our Jan” among the Afrikaner culture, he is revered as one of the activists who lobbied for the formalization of the Afrikaans language in South Africa. Also found at Church Square are 11 concrete blocks depicting the names of slaves brought to Cape Town by the Dutch from the Far East. The guide will provide in-depth explanations about all the buildings and monuments here, including the site of the former slave tree where new slaves were auctioned to their future masters.
-
District Six Museum - The District Six Museum is located on Buitenkant Street, which marked the boundary between white and nonwhite settlements during the early years of apartheid. The museum captures in great detail all the historical artifacts related to the forced removals from what was once a vibrant multiracial community before the 1950 Group Areas Act allowed for the development of racially segregated living spaces in apartheid South Africa.
After the tour of the District Six Museum, the tour continues by car, passing by the Parliament of South Africa before stopping at the Company’s Garden for another walking tour of a beautiful and historic garden in the city center.
-
Company’s Gardens - The historic Company’s Garden is a leafy oasis in the city center. It’s a delightful place to stroll and observe the reconstructed gardens, designed to resemble a typical Dutch East India Company garden at the Cape over 200 years ago. Historical monuments are scattered throughout the garden, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and excellent photo opportunities. The guide will point out all important landmarks visible from here as you enjoy your walk through the garden. After the garden tour, the guide will lead you to the bustling and historic St. George’s Mall, starting from St. George’s Cathedral.
-
St. George’s Mall - St. George’s Mall is a popular paved pathway running north to south from Riebeek Street to the historic St. George’s Cathedral at the base of the old Cape Town city precinct. Cafes, coffee shops, and street vendors selling handmade crafts and scented foods attract a lot of foot traffic, sustaining the vibrant atmosphere of one of Cape Town’s favorite pathways. The art deco and Cape revival style buildings from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s give this street a unique feel not found elsewhere in the inner city. Historical monuments such as the Bishop Robert Gray monument and a piece of the Bellin Wall slow down foot traffic as tourists stop to observe and read the short transcripts to satisfy their curiosity for historical facts. With the guide, you’ll receive additional information not included in the short summaries on the monuments, including facts about religion, culture, and architecture in this part of Cape Town.
-
Noon Day Gun - At the top of Bo-Kaap, just below the summit of Signal Hill, lies Lion Battery, a fort constructed by pick and shovel in the late 1800s due to fears that Russian expansion in Afghanistan might lead to Russian domination of the Indian Ocean and, subsequently, all British interests along its coast. The fort was completed in 1890. Besides being prepared to function as a vantage and firing point over the years, the Lion Battery has also been used as a clock and communication signal by firing a gun. Today, every day at 12 noon, a loud bang from Signal Hill echoes across the entire city of Cape Town, observing one of Cape Town’s unique traditions. The Lion Battery has been open to the public since 1998, but it remains closed today due to COVID-19. The guide will set a timer so that a few seconds before 12, you can stop and listen to the old and famous Cape clock.
-
Greenmarket Square - The lively Greenmarket Square is filled with drummers, buskers, and vendors selling a variety of handmade local crafts that have replaced the fruits and vegetables once traded here during the days of the Cape colony. The stone cobbled square is surrounded by several fascinating Gothic and Baroque-style buildings, offering a clear imagination of what late 19th-century Cape Town might have looked like before adopting its current commercial facade. On December 1, 1834, the abolition of slavery at the Cape was announced from the balcony of the Old Town House, and hymns at the Gothic Revival Methodist Cathedral opposite turned into weeping as the congregation broke down in tears. To this day, the Methodist Cathedral remains a voice for the systematically marginalized communities of Cape Town. The guide will also give you time to enjoy the local foods and souvenirs found here before the tour concludes.
