Explore the Sterkfontein Caves located in the Cradle of Humankind, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 due to its significant contribution to our understanding of human history and evolution over more than 3 million years. Among the remarkable fossils on display is the Ape-man skull, discovered by Robert Broom in 1947, which was later named Mrs. Ples. This discovery brought global attention to the Sterkfontein Caves. The skull is estimated to be over 2.3 million years old. Additionally, Professor Ron Clarke uncovered the “Little Foot,” an almost complete hominid skeleton approximately 3.5 million years old. Homo sapiens, the species to which all humans belong, evolved in the Cradle of Humankind.
The Sterkfontein Caves tour is combined with a visit to the Maropeng Visitor Centre. Maropeng is a world-class visitor center located about 11 kilometers from the Sterkfontein Caves. It features a larger exhibition housed in the distinctive Tumulus building, designed to symbolize the caves where these significant fossils were found.
