Due to its geopolitical and strategic position, Ston boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. Situated at the entrance of the peninsula, surrounded by three seas, protected by four hills, and abundant in fresh and saltwater, fertile plains, it has been a significant political, cultural, and ecclesiastical center.
In 1333, Dubrovnik initiated the planned construction of the fortresses of Ston (Croatian: Veliki Ston) and Little Ston (Croatian: Mali Ston) at the current location. The connection between the two towns along their entire length consisted of large walls intended to defend Pelješac. This entire fortification complex, unique in Europe, was constructed in a short time.
The usurpation by the Branivojević brothers compelled the people of Dubrovnik to combat them in 1326 with the assistance of Stjepan II Kotromanić. That year, Dubrovnik occupied Ston. The people of Dubrovnik promptly began to build and establish a new Ston.
