- Udawalawe National Park - Located in southern Sri Lanka, Udawalawe National Park is a wildlife sanctuary established in 1972, renowned for its significant and easily visible population of Asian elephants. The park was created to safeguard animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe reservoir. It features open plains, grasslands, and forests, with the reservoir acting as a central water source that attracts numerous elephants throughout the year. Besides elephants, visitors can also spot animals such as water buffalos, deer, and leopards, along with a diverse array of bird species. The park also hosts the Elephant Transit Home for orphaned elephants.
- Elephant Transit Home (ETH) - The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH) is a rehabilitation center in Sri Lanka dedicated to orphaned elephant calves. These calves are raised with minimal human interaction until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Managed by the Wildlife Conservation Department of Sri Lanka, the center aims to support young elephants orphaned due to human-wildlife conflict, poaching, or other reasons, helping them to thrive and reintegrate into their natural environment. Visitors can watch the elephants during scheduled feeding times, which occur every three hours from 9 am to 6 pm, but are not allowed to have physical contact with them.

A perfect family adventure - We had an incredible time at Udawalawe National Park. The safari was unforgettable we saw so many elephants (and their babies!) , beautiful water buffalo, and so many amazing birds. It was the perfect family adventure: exciting, safe, and really well organised. It was such a relief to leave the planning up to Happy Turtle Travels - we didn’t have to worry about timings etc. and it made the trip super relaxing. The guide even pulled over a couple of times on the return journey so that we could see monkeys too! A must-do if you’re visiting Sri Lanka!
