Established on the 30th of June 1972, the park lies on the boundary of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces of Sri Lanka. As such, it majorly consists of plains, grasslands, forests, and marshes - while being bounded by soaring mountains along the northern border. A major river, the Walawe, and many of its tributaries run pass through the park, providing ample water for the wildlife. The annual rainfall in the Udawalawe National Park is around 1500 millimeters, and the average temperature stays at a comfortable 27° - 28° Centigrade (81°-82°F). The park has over 94 species of plants, 21 species of fish, 12 species of amphibians, over 30 species of reptiles, over 180 species of birds (33 of which are migratory), 43 species of mammals, and 135 species of butterflies.

Safari - Not many elephants in Sept and August they are up north in Aug and Sept. Better other times of year. Enjoyed our time with two very friendly baby elephants.

Lovely driver and fabulous experience - The safari was amazing and though at times it felt busy with jeeps it wasn’t uncomfortable. Our guide on safari was Max, and he was super knowledgeable and was such a calm presence. It felt like we were being really respectful of the animals. We mostly had our engine off just admiring everything from elephants to little green bee eaters. I thought there would be a cash line somewhere on the way so I could get a tip for max but had to go away and get one and come back. Be warned!
Kani our transfer driver was the ultimate professional from start to finish. We were so happy with the service. He was really lovely and chatty and gave us lots of interesting facts and history on Sri Lanka and the areas he took us to. He also was a very good driver, the journeys were really smooth which allowed us to sleep on the early morning pickups. We would give Kani 5 stars and would count ourselves very lucky if we were ever to have him as our driver again.

Great adventure and memories! - Great experience a lot of elephant families!
Lahiru helped us also to arrang the cheaper and good transportation to the Safari Park and found lot of elephants and other animals too. The safari trip took 4 hours so we had enough time to admire the animals. No rush. You can observe animals as long as you want.
Thank you Lahiru Prasad for the the great memories you gave us.

See Elephants very close! - We went to the safari in the afternoon
(2:45 - 6pm) in a jeep organised by our driver. Entrance fee was 22,500 rupees + the cost of our jeep and guide which was 9000 (about £75 in total). We saw so many elephants and they came very very close! The elephants seemed happy and calm, even when jeeps were near. They are obviously used to them and do not see us as a threat. We also saw a number of different birds, our favourite being the peacocks, a toucan and the little green bee-eater. As we went in August, which is their dry season, the lakes were almost all dried up but we were still lucky enough to see two small crocodiles. We would definitely recommend a safari at Udawalawe.

Wild Elephants :) - Our guide was fantastic, very observant and we were lucky to see crocodiles, elephants :) and lots of birds. On arrival it was very busy and lots of 4x4s crowded together, mostly empty which was sad as we could have shared vehicles and reduced the traffic. However, once we got properly into the park it was much quieter and barely saw anyone else. Lovely picnic spot by the river and the baby elephant made me happy

Average - We want in the afternoon and saw maybe 4 elephants, some deer and some monkeys. The park is mostly filled with birds and peacocks which isn't that interesting for us. The price was pretty expensive for not seeing much over 3hrs. A lot of aimless driving. 8000lkr to hire a Jeep and 23000lkr 2ppl entrance fee. We also did Kaudulla NP (in the north), which we enjoyed a lot more.
