Then, visit a nearby temple, such as the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, to receive blessings and gain insight into Sri Lanka’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.

Henawala - Next, immerse yourself in a local village market—a feast for the senses. Stalls are brimming with fresh vegetables, tropical fruits like rambutan and mango, and aromatic piles of cinnamon, cardamom, and curry leaves.

As evening approaches, join a traditional cooking session and learn to prepare authentic Sri Lankan dishes like fragrant rice and curry, using time-honored techniques and clay pots. Then, enjoy dinner with the family, seated together on the veranda as the sun sets.

The night comes alive with a bonfire, where stories of local legends and folklore are shared, accompanied by the gentle beat of traditional drums and soulful village music. Finally, drift to sleep in your cozy village homestay, lulled by the sounds of nature.

Pilimathalawa - Morning – Warm Greeting & Breakfast
Start your second day with a warm smile and a fresh cup of Ceylon tea or ginger-infused herbal drink prepared by your host family. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast of string hoppers, coconut sambol, and lunu miris (spicy onion relish).

Settle into the rhythm of village life
After breakfast, take a moment to relax on the veranda, watch the morning sun filter through palm trees, and listen to birdsong. Your homestay feels more like home now.

Walk through Kotabogoda Village & meet friendly locals
Set out on foot through the village. Greet farmers heading to their paddy fields, stop for a chat with a beedi-rolling grandmother, and watch children walk to school. The village welcomes you like an old friend.

Gadaladeniya Temple Junction - A striking 14th-century temple built on a rock slab, blending Buddhist and Hindu architecture. Marvel at the reclining Buddha and stone inscriptions.

Embekke Devalaya - Renowned for its intricate wooden carvings—dancers, soldiers, mythical beasts, and lotus motifs—this is a living museum of medieval craftsmanship.

Pilimathalawa Tea Factory - After returning from the temples, visit a nearby village market. See vibrant displays of fresh vegetables (snake gourd, bitter melon, drumsticks), tropical fruits (mango, wood apple, custard apple), and fragrant stacks of spices—cloves, cardamom, pepper, and curry leaves.

National Railway Museum - Evening – Traditional cooking session
As dusk approaches, roll up your sleeves for a hands-on cooking session. Learn to prepare authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry—including coconut sambol, dhal curry, jackfruit curry, and a tangy fish or chicken curry. Your host mother shares secrets of roasting spices and pounding sambols with a traditional mortar and pestle.

Enjoy dinner with the family
Gather around the dining mat or table to share the meal you helped create. Eat with your hands, taste the layers of spice, and enjoy heartfelt conversation. Seconds are always encouraged.

Night – Bonfire with storytelling & local music
After dinner, gather under the stars beside a crackling bonfire. Listen to village elders share folktales, ghost stories, and legends of ancient kings. The night comes alive with the rhythmic beat of a rabana drum and soft folk songs sung by your host family.

Heeloya Experience

Heeloya - Morning – Depart from Pilimatalawa

After an early breakfast at your Pilimatalawa accommodation, bid farewell to the lowland village life. Your private vehicle takes you on a 2-hour scenic drive towards the Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed biosphere reserve. The road winds through tea estates, misty valleys, and cascading streams, with the iconic five-fingered peaks of Knuckles appearing on the horizon.

Arrive at Heeloya Village – Welcome & tea

You are greeted at Heeloya Village by a local guide and host family. Sip a hot cup of kola kenda (herbal porridge), a traditional energizer used by villagers and trekkers alike. Settle in briefly and prepare for the hike ahead.

Knuckles Mountain Range - Nature hike through Heeloya Village & Knuckles forest trails

Set off on a guided nature hike through Heeloya’s lush paths and deeper into the Knuckles forest. The trail includes:

Village farmlands – Walk through cardamom and pepper plantations, betel vines, and small paddy fields. Meet villagers tending their crops or collecting firewood.

Stream crossings – Step across crystal-clear mountain streams where you can cool your feet and spot tiny freshwater fish.

Cloud forest zone – Enter a canopy of moss-covered trees, ferns, orchids, and giant bamboo. Listen for the calls of endemic birds like the yellow-eared bulbul or Sri Lanka whistling thrush.

Waterfall stop – Depending on the route, pause at a hidden waterfall (e.g., Sera Ella or a smaller cascade) for photos and a refreshing splash.
