He appointed Father Lopez as the mission’s leader, making him the first parish priest in St. Augustine.

The barracks were adapted for military use when the British took control of Florida in 1763. In 1821, Florida was acquired by the United States, and the US Army managed the barracks until they were deactivated in 1900. They were then leased to Florida State Troops, the precursor to today’s National Guard, in 1907.

Flagler built the church in memory of his daughter Jennie Louise Flagler, who passed away in 1889. He selected Carrere & Hastings, the architects of the Ponce de Leon Hotel, to design it. Its architecture is inspired by the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice, Italy.

It is surrounded by the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, Trinity Episcopal, and the Government House.
