- Basseterre - Exploring St. Kitts Island is the ideal way to experience St. Kitts. The tour begins at the hotel or cruise port and proceeds into the historic city of Basseterre. Admire the stone and wooden buildings from the 1800s, featuring intricate decorative lattice work, and discover why the architecture of these structures has been preserved. Notable buildings include the Co-Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception and the Anglican Church. The renowned Circus Clock (Little Ben) is a symbol of our history as you navigate this circular area.
The next historical site is Independence Square (formerly Pall Mall Square). The name was changed when St. Kitts gained independence from Britain on September 19, 1983. This picturesque area is now a garden for leisurely strolls and fun events. Like its neighboring sister islands, St. Kitts also participated in the slave trade during the 1700s and 1800s, and this venue, now known as “Independence Square,” was once “Pall Mall Square.”
- Independence Square - This enclosed area served as the slave market. Some surrounding buildings, particularly those with stone foundations, were dungeons that held slaves arriving from ships before being auctioned. They were publicly displayed and sold like livestock. The square was named Pall Mall Square, a name given by British slave owners. Previously, it was called “The Pasture.” Charles Dickens wrote about this square in 1891 in “A Famous West India Island” and “All the Year Round.”
Some current buildings still contain artifacts used to bind slaves while they awaited sale.
In an effort to mark Kittitians’ freedom from this dark period, Pall Mall Square was renamed “Independence Square.” This was a significant year when the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis gained independence from Britain on September 19, 1983, allowing the Federation to chart its own course for its people. Independence Square is now a pleasant space for relaxation.
- Romney Manor - Features a 200-year-old manor tree, batik fabric making, a botanical garden, and is a former slave plantation.
- Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park - The next stop is the “Gibraltar of the West Indies,” Brimstone Hill, a stunning fortress now a UNESCO Heritage Site. A US$15 entrance fee (not included) supports the ongoing restoration of this magnificent fortress. Explore this majestic structure, viewing cannons, artifacts of 18th-century British soldiers’ uniforms, tools, and more. The visit will certainly enlighten you on the history while you marvel at this imposing architectural structure.
This fort was coveted by several countries, leading to constant battles between the British and French for the island. Slaves were used to construct the fortress and fortify it by mounting cannons on the hill, enabling the British to recapture the fort. Limestone was turned into mortar, and volcanic rock into blocks, making Brimstone Hill the most impressive fortress in the British West Indies.
