Kiener participated in the 1904 St. Louis Olympic Games as part of the U.S. track and field team. Later, he became a steel executive and philanthropist, donating this land in his will for a public plaza. • Dred And Harriet Scott Statue - The Dred and Harriet Scott Statue on the courthouse’s east side honors the Scotts’ fight for freedom in the US courts. Although ultimately unsuccessful, their struggle directly contributed to the onset of the United States Civil War.
• Luther Ely Smith Square - Luther Ely Smith Square marks the beginning of the St. Louis Gateway Mall, a series of parks and green spaces running through downtown St. Louis. The park honors Luther Ely Smith, the visionary behind the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the precursor to Gateway Arch National Park. The park also marks the start of the Gateway Arch Trail, which meanders through the National Park. Two beautiful zen gardens offer shade and relaxation.
• Museum of Westward Expansion - The Gateway Arch Museum of Western Expansion is among the finest National Park museums in the nation. It boasts an impressive collection of artifacts and engaging, interactive exhibits.
