• The Old Post Office and Custom House - The twin pillars and fortress-like design are exemplary of French Second Empire architecture. Its seemingly out-of-place appearance was intentional! After the Civil War, cities like St. Louis were recovering from defeat. Officials aimed to restore local pride, so in 1873, Alfred Mullett was tasked with designing a structure to remind residents of St. Louis’s French heritage.
• St. Louis Public Library - Central Library - Upon reaching the intersection of Locust and 13th, the St. Louis Public Library will be visible on the left. This grand stone building is unmissable. The library system was established in 1865, though not in this location.
• New Masonic Temple - Just beyond the next intersection, a grand, multi-layered stone building with giant columns and large bronze doors will appear on the right. This was once a Freemason temple, sold in 2017. The Freemasons are a global fraternal society with closed membership, known for their temples and groups worldwide.
• Forest Park - Approaching Forest Park, this expansive 1,300-acre park, established in 1876, is the heart of downtown St. Louis. For comparison, New York City’s Central Park is only 843 acres!
• St. Louis Zoo - This is one of the many attractions originally built for the 1904 World’s Fair, deemed too remarkable to dismantle. Initially, it wasn’t a full zoo, just an aviary on loan from Washington D.C. and a few exotic animal exhibits.
