The tour spans over 10.5 miles, featuring more than 47 audio stories, and takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete.
- Kiener Plaza Park - Kiener, a native of St. Louis, earned a reputation as a notable sportsman in his youth. He excelled in various sports, including boxing, wrestling, and swimming, and even competed in the 1904 Olympic Games as part of the US track team.
- Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France - While much of the area was acquired for Gateway Arch National Park, the Old Cathedral remained an exception, continuing to be a cornerstone of the St. Louis community.
- The Old Post Office and Custom House - The twin pillars and fortress-like design exemplify French Second Empire architecture. Its distinct appearance was intentional! After the Civil War, cities like St. Louis sought to restore local pride. In 1873, Alfred Mullett was commissioned to design a structure that would remind residents of St. Louis’s French heritage.
- St. Louis Public Library - Central Library - At the intersection of Locust and 13th, the St. Louis Public Library stands prominently on the left. This grand stone building is unmissable. The library system began in 1865, though not in this location.
- New Masonic Temple - Just beyond the next intersection, a grand, multi-layered stone structure with giant columns and large bronze doors appears on the right. Once a Freemason temple, it was sold in 2017. The Freemasons are a fraternal society with temples and groups worldwide.
- Forest Park - Entering Forest Park, this expansive 1,300-acre park, established in 1876, is the heart of downtown St. Louis. For comparison, New York City’s Central Park is only 843 acres!
- St. Louis Zoo - Originally built for the 1904 World’s Fair, this attraction was too remarkable to discard. Initially, it wasn’t a proper zoo but an aviary on loan from Washington D.C. and a few exotic animal exhibits.
- Saint Louis Art Museum - That’s King Louis IX of France! Known as the Apotheosis of St. Louis, this statue is a replica of the original.
- Emerson Grand Basin - During the World’s Fair, this basin was a focal point. All temporary exhibition buildings surrounded this water body, offering visitors a stunning view.
- Dennis & Judith Jones Visitor & Education Center - The tour concludes here. The visitor center is just ahead, with parking on the right. It’s highly recommended to park here, grab a map, and spend more time exploring Forest Park.
