Savoring St. Lucia: A Day of Rum, Chocolate, and Coastal Wonders
When the allure of rum, chocolate, and a buffet tour in St. Lucia called, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with tropical rain showers, historic plantations, and the vibrant flavors of the Caribbean.
Setting Sail from Rodney Bay
The day began with a gentle breeze and the promise of adventure as we set sail from the vibrant Rodney Bay marina. The catamaran, our vessel for the day, was a lively hub of excitement as fellow travelers and I exchanged stories of our island escapades. As we cruised past Pigeon Island, the lush greenery and azure waters painted a picture-perfect backdrop. Even the occasional tropical rain shower couldn’t dampen our spirits; it only added to the authenticity of the Caribbean experience.
Our journey down the coast was a visual feast. The fishing villages of Anse La Raye and Canaries passed by, each with its own unique charm and character. The highlight, however, was the majestic Pitons, rising dramatically from the sea. These iconic peaks are a testament to the raw beauty of St. Lucia, and I couldn’t resist capturing a few photos to share with you all.
A Taste of History and Flavor at Morne Coubaril
Upon reaching Soufriere, a small group of us opted for the rum and chocolate tasting tour at the Morne Coubaril Estate. This historic plantation, dating back to the early 1700s, offered a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past. Our guide was a wealth of knowledge, introducing us to the various tropical plants used by the natives for medicinal purposes.
The chocolate-making process was a revelation. Watching our guide crack open a cocoa pod to reveal the beans, I was reminded of the simple joys of island life. The transformation from bean to bar was mesmerizing, and tasting the estate-grown chocolate was a moment to savor. The rum tasting was equally delightful, with 11 varieties to sample. The Chairman’s Spiced Rum was a standout, its rich flavors perfectly capturing the essence of St. Lucia.
Snorkeling and Sunsets on the Return Journey
After a delicious buffet lunch at the estate, we made our way back to the catamaran. The return journey was just as enchanting, with a stop for snorkeling along the West Coast. The underwater world was teeming with life, a vibrant tapestry of colors and movement that left me in awe.
As we cruised through Marigot Bay, the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the water. The crew, ever friendly and attentive, ensured our glasses were never empty, offering Piton beer, rum punch, and refreshing drinks. It was the perfect end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
This Rum, Chocolate, and Buffet Tour was more than just a tour; it was a celebration of St. Lucia’s rich culture and natural beauty. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience the island’s highlights in a single, unforgettable day.
