- Railway Office Building - The tour begins at the Main Railway Station, a grand complex constructed in the 1920s, featuring a 12-story tower crowned with the Mercedes-Benz logo, visible from a distance.
Exiting the train station, the tour proceeds to Königsstrasse (King’s Street), a pedestrian shopping area bordered by stunning palace grounds. The first stop is Palace Square, the largest square in the inner city, which includes the royal gardens. These gardens were renovated in 1977 for the State Garden Exhibit and again in 2006 for the World Cup Finals. The area is adorned with sculptures, fountains, and even a lake next to the New Palace, dating back to the late 18th century. It is a popular spot for recreation, sports, open-air concerts, and Christmas markets.
Opposite the palace is the Königsbau, a city palace commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm I, which has been ingeniously transformed into a shopping mall. Across from the Königsbau is Stuttgart’s Art Museum, a remarkable glass cube showcasing many fine examples of German modern art, and offering a spectacular light show in the evening.
The tour then moves to Schiller Square, centered around a statue of Friedrich Schiller, the renowned writer celebrated as Germany’s Shakespeare. Although the statue is a recent addition, the city’s origins can be traced back nearly 1,000 years to this location. It was here that the first stone buildings were constructed, most notably the old castle, a former fortification once surrounded by a water-filled moat.
Also notable are the Collegiate Church, the Fruchtkasten, a Gothic-style stone building, and the Ministry of Justice. Many buildings here underwent significant renovations during the Renaissance and again after World War II. Today, the square serves as a marketplace and a Christmas market.
The next stop is the City Market Hall, adorned with beautiful murals on its facade. Just a few minutes away is Karls Square, featuring a statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I, the first German Emperor and Head of State of a united modern Germany, on horseback. Behind the statue are two obelisks, serving as a monument to the Franco-Prussian War, marking not only Germany’s victory over France but also the beginning of Germany as a united and modern nation in the mid-19th century.
