- Hwaseong Fortress - This World Heritage-listed fortress wall encircles the historic town of Suwon, attracting many visitors to the city. The wall winds its way up and down Paldal-san (143m), extending a picturesque 5.7km and passing by four grand gates, command posts, pavilions, observation towers, and fire-beacon platforms. Commissioned by King Jeongjo and completed in 1796, it was built using earth, large stone blocks, and grey bricks, most of which have been meticulously restored.

In the 18th century, Suwon nearly became the nation’s capital when King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty constructed the 5.7km-long walls between 1794 and 1796, in preparation for relocating the royal court south. However, the king’s death kept the seat of power in Seoul, leaving Suwon with an impressive tourist attraction. The city is situated approximately 30km south of Seoul.
