In the 18th century, Suwon nearly became the nation’s capital when King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty constructed the 5.7km-long walls between 1794 and 1796, in preparation for relocating the royal court south. However, the king’s death kept the seat of power in Seoul, leaving Suwon with an impressive tourist attraction. The city is situated approximately 30km south of Seoul.
