Clients have the opportunity to observe between 80,000 to 100,000 Cape Fur Seals up close, offering a truly unforgettable experience. In October, large adult males come ashore to establish breeding territories, remaining for six weeks or more. These bulls use significant energy reserves and lose weight while establishing and maintaining territories, herding females, and engaging in battles with other males. A single pup is typically born in late November or early December, with 90% of pups arriving within a 34-day period. The black pups begin nursing shortly after birth, and the females stay with them for the first week. This close interaction creates a strong maternal bond between the pup and its mother. This initial bonding period is crucial, as it allows the mother and pup to recognize each other among thousands of seals. Without the mother’s milk, the pup’s survival chances are nearly nonexistent. When separated, the mother calls out for her pup, and remarkably, they manage to reunite.
