Teatro Greco - “Despite its state of neglect, it remains one of the most beautiful places in the world, offering a grand and picturesque spectacle.” (Vivant Denon, Voyage en Sicile, 1788) The Greek Theatre is a prime example of Greek West theatrical architecture, notable for being almost entirely carved into rock. Besides performances, as was customary for the ancient Greeks, the theater was also used for public assemblies. During imperial times, it was adapted for circus games and later fell into disrepair. In the 16th century, like other classical monuments, it was looted by Spanish workers under Charles V, who used the pre-cut stone to build the fortifications of Ortigia. Excavations began at the end of the 18th century and continued into the next century, finally completing in the mid-20th century, revealing its astonishing beauty to visitors.

Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime - The Lacrimation occurred in Syracuse from August 29 to September 1, 1953, in the home of a young couple, Angelo Iannuso and Antonina Lucia Giusto. Antonina experienced a difficult pregnancy with recurring vision loss. Around 3 a.m. on August 29, her eyesight vanished completely, only to return at 8:30 a.m. when she saw tears falling from the face of a plaster Madonna placed at the head of the bed. The enamelled plaster half-bust depicting the Madonna with her Immaculate Heart was a wedding gift. The Lacrimation repeated at least 58 times, quickly spreading news and turning the Iannuso home into a pilgrimage site. The temple, started in 1988, was inaugurated on November 6, 1994, by St. John Paul II. It stands about 103 meters high with a diameter of 71.40 meters. The Shrine’s shape symbolizes humanity’s elevation to God and Mary, a light leading to Jesus.

Ortigia - Ortigia is the name of the island that forms the oldest part of the city of Syracuse. It is bordered to the east by some rocks, including a larger but mostly submerged one historically known as the Isle of Dogs. Geologically, the island of Ortigia is part of the Hyblaean mountains. Beneath its limestone rock flows fresh water, fed by a deep Hyblean aquifer.
