Great ferry crossing - Originally we planned to fly from Helsinki to Tallinn but due to an industrial dispute we decided to take the ferry. There are two companies and we went with Viking. The loading process was so slick and efficient, 2000+ passengers were on board in about 15 minutes. We booked a standard cabin which cost €40 but we had a very comfortable room with a sea view and bathroom all to ourselves. The 2.5 hour crossing was very smooth and getting off in Tallinn was very efficient again. I thought we might have to wait for a taxi but there was no problem. Highly recommend the ferry, cheaper the flying and just as quick door to door.

Worth a day trip - The most affordable way to go from helsinki to Tallin on a day trip is to book your reservation online and depending on the times that you want to travel you may end up using different cruise ship companies. We opted for Tallink on the way over and they were exceptionally good. We used Viking on the return and were disappointed. No need to book with a tour company as there are many free guides that you can make a reservation ahead of time. Be sure to give them a tip if you like the tour. There are a variety of guided tours, depending on what aspect of history and culture you are interested in.

Tallinn: Well worth the trip - It’s a 3-hour guided walking tour. And another 3 hours on your own to explore. Our guide was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable about the country’s history. She also gave us excellent restaurant recommendations and shopping suggestions. It was a long day, but it was also a lovely experience.

Ferry tips - First of all, the passengers line up early and push to get the best spots. Go to floor 8 and try to sit in the large area at the front of the ship where there is a “band,” but the main attraction is comfortable seating. There is also a small area on the side of the ship towards the front with comfortable seating. If you are traveling at dinner or lunch time, I highly recommend the VIP lounge on 6, right next to the information desk as you get on. It is 34 euros each, but is lovely, quiet, with a light meal and beer and wine included and private restrooms and seating

Tallinn is a beautiful city to visit if you can tolerate the unpleasant ferry crossing - We made this day trip on a Saturday in May. The positives were the many beautiful, and well preserved historic sites in Tallinn Old City and the high quality commentary of the local guide. The guide was very knowledgeable and provided engaging insights to all the sites we visited. The negatives were the ferry crossing. The on and off boarding at both ends was congested and at times chaotic and on the ferry itself, it was crowded and noisy in both directions making the crossings rather unpleasant.

Guide was passionate... - Guide was passionate about his home country after having returned to it, but needs better public speaking skills. He was hard to hear as well. Best part of the tour was the restaurant La Prima right next to where tour ended...incredible food and service!

Overpriced - It’s a great deal of time in the midevil city and a good deal of money for less than three hours of guide led tour and includes no access to interior of any buildings. It leaves three hours for self guided touring. Ride to and from cruise liner is nice, but there are cabs. Note, this is not to take away from our guide, who was great.
