- Tallinna Raekoja Plats - The Leaning House of Tartu, often referred to as the Pisa Tower of Tartu, was constructed adjacent to the medieval city wall in 1793. The side of the house facing the river is supported by the ancient city wall, while the opposite side is held up by poles, causing the house to lean. The Tartu Museum of Art’s permanent exhibition of Estonian Art is housed here.
Interesting facts: - The house is also known as the Barclay House because Princess Barclay, who purchased the building in 1819 after her husband Barclay de Tolly’s passing, resided there; - A pharmacy operated in the building for many years, starting in 1879. The renowned Estonian writer Oskar Luts worked here as a chemist in the early 20th century.
- Tartu Toy Museum - Located in Tartu’s Old Town, the Tartu Toy Museum invites adults to revisit the joyful days of their childhood while offering children a variety of engaging activities.
The permanent exhibition showcases toys that Estonian children have enjoyed over the years. It also features artist-made dolls, souvenir dolls from various nations, and traditional Finno-Ugric toys. Playrooms and workshops are available. Visitors can view puppets from Estonian puppet films and temporary exhibitions in the outbuilding. The museum also includes a theatre building called ‘Teatri kodu’ (The Home of Theatre), which houses a theatre hall, a puppet museum, and a children’s studio.
- Tartu Cathedral - Situated on the picturesque Toomemägi Hill, Tartu Cathedral is one of Estonia’s largest churches and the only medieval church in the country with two towers. Construction began in the 13th century and was completed in the early 16th century, with the towers being the final addition. The church was destroyed during the Livonian War and has not functioned as a church since. The ruins of Tartu Cathedral are among the most significant examples of brick-Gothic architecture in Old Livonia.
