Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate 1500 m – Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m)
Mount Meru - Duration: Approximately 5 – 7 hours of hiking.
After enjoying a leisurely breakfast at the lodge or hotel in Arusha, the journey begins with a drive to the first gate of Arusha National Park for registration. Following this, proceed to Momella Gate, the starting point of the hike. While the guide completes the necessary park formalities at the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA) office, the porters and cook will be busy organizing, packing, and weighing all the essentials for the hike. It’s possible to have a packed lunch at the gate before starting.
The climb up Mt Meru begins afterward, with the first day resembling a walking safari. Along the way, expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffaloes. Due to the high likelihood of encountering wildlife, an armed ranger hired through TANAPA will accompany the group. The route passes the Ngarenanyuki River, and if taking the shortcut, a beautiful waterfall at the foot of Mt. Meru can be seen. By late afternoon, the group will arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m), where the chef will be ready to serve.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut 2,500 m – Saddle Hut 3,500 m
Mount Meru - Duration: 3 – 5 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Forest Zone.
After breakfast, the climb continues on a steep path through the forest zone, where various wildlife can be observed. This trail offers views of the Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. Arrival at Saddle Hut, located in the alpine desert zone, is expected around lunchtime.
After lunch and some rest, there is an option to climb Little Meru (3,820 m) with the guide for a spectacular view of the surrounding area and further acclimatization. An early dinner will be served to ensure ample rest before the midnight summit attempt. Sleep is recommended around 19:00 hrs.
Overnight stay at Saddle Hut (3,500 m).
Day 3: Saddle Hut (3,500 m) – Meru Summit Socialist Peak (4,566 m) – Miriakamba (2,500 m)
Mount Meru - Duration: Approximately 10-12 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Alpine desert.
A wake-up call is scheduled for 00:30 hours, with tea and biscuits served before beginning the summit attempt at around 01:30 hrs. The climb starts on a steep trail leading to Rhino Point (3,800 m) and then to Cobra Point (4,350 m).
From there, the path follows a rocky ridge between the Crater and the inner cliffs of Mt Meru. By early morning, the summit (4,566 m) is reached, offering a breathtaking sunrise view from the East. At this time, Kilimanjaro is usually visible, and the Crater’s cliffs drop dramatically at nearly 1000 feet or more.
After spending some time at the summit, return to Saddle Hut for a leisurely brunch, then continue descending to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Miriakamba – Momella Gate – Arusha
Mount Meru - Duration: 2-3 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Forest.
The climb to Mt Meru concludes with a restful breakfast before descending to Momella Gate. The hike passes through the forest, where wildlife sightings are likely. If the longer route was taken on the first day, the descent will pass by the Tululunsi Waterfalls. At the gate, the driver will be waiting. After farewells and tipping the crew, the journey back to Arusha begins.

Situated to the east of Arusha town, approximately a 20-kilometer drive from Arusha, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second tallest mountain. It rises to an elevation of 4,566 meters above sea level within Arusha National Park.
Mount Meru offers a single route to the summit, which can be completed in three days, though a four-day trek is recommended for better acclimatization. Many climbers use Meru to acclimatize before tackling Kilimanjaro. The mountain features minimal snow due to its volcanic activity.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, climbing Mount Meru requires an escort by armed ranger(s) as the path traverses Arusha National Park. During this time, trekkers can enjoy a walking safari, encountering wildlife such as African buffaloes, zebras, and black and white colobus monkeys, among others.
