Kilimanjaro Region - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to either “Aishi Machame” or “Altezza Lodge” hotel in Moshi. These accommodations offer everything needed after your flight, including hot water, courteous staff, a swimming pool, a pleasant restaurant, and internet access.
Our modern and comfortable transfer vehicles are equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi and bottled water.
Trekking from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Mount Meru - Early in the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. During this time, the porters will organize and pack your belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). The first day of hiking resembles a walking safari, with opportunities to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and possibly elephants near the trail.
Due to the high likelihood of encountering wildlife, an armed ranger, hired through the National Park, will accompany our team throughout the hike. As you continue, you will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a stunning waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru.
Upon reaching Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and warm water for you.
Trekking from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Mount Meru - After breakfast, you will begin ascending the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle. You may encounter various wildlife along the way! The trail offers breathtaking views of Meru Crater and the Ash Cone.
Upon arrival at camp, you have the option to hike Little Meru (3,820 m) with your guide to further acclimate. An early dinner will be served, allowing you to rest well before your midnight summit attempt.
Trekking from Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak and Descent to Miriakamba Hut
Mount Meru - The summit attempt begins early, around 00:00. There is a 1-hour steep climb to Rhino Point (3,800 m), followed by a path along a ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4,350 m). The summit of Socialist Peak (4,562 m) is an hour further on a steep path with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. Depending on your pace, you can enjoy the sunrise at Cobra Point or the summit. The views are breathtaking: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds, and the Rift Valley. The return route to Rhino Point in the morning light along a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. Brunch and a brief rest are taken at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to Miriakamba Hut for an overnight stay.
Descent from Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
Mount Meru - After breakfast, you will begin your final stretch on the northern route back to Momella Gate. During this 2 to 3-hour trek, you will once again have the chance to see giraffes, buffaloes, and elephants, as well as the black and white colobus monkeys. After your descent, the entire group will gather to congratulate you, and then you will be transferred to Moshi or Arusha town.

Often overshadowed by the allure of Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru, Tanzania’s second tallest peak, is regularly underestimated by hikers. Dominating the skyline of Arusha National Park, Mount Meru serves as an ideal preparatory hike for Kilimanjaro, whilst remaining a compelling and scenic journey into the wilderness on its own.
Exploring Mount Meru is a true escapade. The hillsides of this sleeping (but not extinct - it last erupted in 1910) volcano provide captivating panoramic views and a vibrant wildlife habitat.
This volcano cropped up roughly half a million years ago, and its inaugural eruption sharply defined its eastern side, giving it its distinctive shape. Not to mention, Mt Meru boasts one of the deepest crater depths – exceeding 1,500 meters!
Our certified, Wilderness First Responder-qualified mountain guides will be guiding your trek. The Altezza Travel mountain team is responsible for all camping logistics, food, and other key expedition necessities.
In contrast to the shorter 3-day option, this Mt Meru trek includes an additional day for the descent.
