Moshi - Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Mandara Hut (2,743m/9,000ft)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation Gain: 915 meters, 3,000 feet
Depart Moshi at 8 am heading to Marangu Gate. After completing the registration process at the gate, embark on your Kilimanjaro adventure. The trail is narrow and winds through the lush rainforest of Kilimanjaro for the majority of the journey. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Kisambioni, marking the halfway point of the first day. After lunch, continue trekking through the rainforest until reaching Mandara Hut. Spend the rest of the day relaxing or take a brief walk to Maundi Crater. On a clear day, the views to the east over Taveta and to the northwest towards Mawenzi Peak are breathtaking, making the short hike worthwhile.
The A-frame Mandara Huts can host up to seventy people and include several sleeping huts and a dining area. All huts in Marangu are equipped with beds and mattresses.
Mandara Hut (2,743m/9,000ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation Gain: 977 meters, 3,200 feet
After breakfast, leave Mandara Hut and the forests of Kilimanjaro behind as you head to Horombo Hut. The majority of the day’s trek will be through Kilimanjaro’s moorland, characterized by rocky terrain and desert-like vegetation. Enjoy a picnic lunch at KambiyaTaabu before continuing to Horombo Hut. If the weather is clear, take in the stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut around 3 pm and spend the rest of the afternoon unwinding.
Despite being very busy, the Horombo Huts are considered the most pleasant on Kilimanjaro. The small, A-frame structures can accommodate up to eight people each and provide lodging for hikers ascending, descending, and acclimatizing. Horombo can host up to one hundred hikers along with numerous porters, cooks, and guides.
Acclimatization trek to Zebra Rocks (4020m) then back to Horombo Hut (3700m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today is dedicated to acclimatization. This should not be underestimated as it significantly enhances your chances of successfully reaching the summit. After a leisurely breakfast, embark on a 4-hour trek to the Zebra Rocks (4020m). The unique black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. Upon returning to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be ready for you. Spend the afternoon relaxing and regaining strength for the next day’s hike.
Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today’s journey is long and challenging. The well-maintained trail passes the “Last Water point” followed by the “saddle”, a nearly vegetation-free plateau connecting the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s goal is to reach Kibo Hut, typically achieved in about 5 – 6 hours. Here, enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be brief.
Kibo Hut (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3700m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today is “The Big Day” – the summit stage. Begin the final ascent around midnight, which will be long and demanding. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb steadily progresses upwards. At sunrise, reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will gradually warm the land. The cold of the night will soon be forgotten, and after an additional 1 – 2 hours of hiking, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. Upon returning to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits, followed by a 1 – 2 hour rest before continuing back down to Horombo Hut.
Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The final stage traverses through the heath and moor zone to Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch awaits. Soon, you will pass through the tropical rainforest again, and after a total of 6 hours of trekking, you will arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After bidding farewell to your mountain guides, a short transfer will take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, enjoy a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your achievement of reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro.
