Machame Gate to Machame Camp (Elevation: 1,830m to 2,835m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - After being picked up from the hotel, the team will drive to Machame Gate. The journey begins with park registration at Machame Gate. The trail leads into a vibrant montane forest, often shrouded in mist, with moss-covered trees and towering ferns. This area is home to unique bird species and the elusive black-and-white Colobus monkeys. As the ascent continues, the air is fresh and humid. Expert guides maintain a “Pole Pole” (slowly) pace to help the body start acclimatizing. By late afternoon, Machame Camp is reached at the forest’s edge, where tents are already set up by the diligent crew. Enjoy a delightful mountain dinner under the stars, with the forest’s sounds lulling you to sleep. This is a wonderful introduction to Mount Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems and the start of an unforgettable week.
• Elevation: 1,830m to 2,835m
• Distance: 11km
• Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
• Environment: Montane Forest
Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp (Elevation: 2,835m to 3,850m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - After a hearty breakfast, the journey continues from the rainforest to a steeper path into the moorland zone. The tall trees transition to giant heather and rocky landscapes. Several small streams are crossed before traversing a rocky ridge leading to the Shira Plateau. This ancient volcanic crater offers expansive views, and as the clouds shift, clear glimpses of the majestic Kibo Peak can be seen. The hike is more exposed today, so sun protection is essential. The trek continues across the plateau to reach Shira 2 Camp. The thinner air is noticeable here, but the wide-open scenery is inspiring. In the evening, the plateau is often bathed in a golden sunset, providing a perfect photographic opportunity. The team will have warm water and snacks ready as you settle into this high-altitude wilderness for the night.
• Elevation: 2,835m to 3,850m
• Distance: 5km
• Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
• Environment: Moorland
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp (Elevation: 3,850m to 4,630m to 3,900m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today’s journey follows the mountaineering principle of “climb high, sleep low.” The path heads east toward the towering Lava Tower, a massive volcanic plug. The landscape transforms into a sparse, rocky alpine desert. The base of Lava Tower is reached at 4,630m for lunch. Spending time at this altitude challenges the system and triggers essential red blood cell production for the summit. After lunch, the descent into the stunning Barranco Valley begins. This visually spectacular descent features the unique “hidden garden” of giant Senecios and Lobelias. The camp is nestled beneath the Great Barranco Wall, offering a dramatic backdrop. Although the day ends at a similar altitude to where it started, the body will have adapted significantly to the thin air, preparing for the higher camps ahead. It is a long but rewarding trek.
• Elevation: 3,850m to 4,630m to 3,900m
• Distance: 10km
• Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
• Environment: Alpine Desert
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The morning begins with an exhilarating scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. While it appears daunting, the “Breakfast Wall” is an enjoyable hike that requires using hands for balance in a few spots. No technical climbing is involved, and guides will assist every step of the way. Once at the top, incredible views of the Karanga Valley and the southern glaciers are the reward. From here, hills and valleys are traversed before descending into the Karanga Valley. A final short climb leads to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter hiking day, designed to allow the body to recover and store energy for the upcoming summit push. Enjoy a hot lunch and spend the afternoon resting and taking in the panoramic views of the clouds below. This restful afternoon is the secret to a strong finish.
• Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m
• Distance: 5km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Environment: Alpine Desert
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - Departing from Karanga Camp, the path connects with the Mweka Trail. The route ascends through a desolate landscape toward Barafu Camp. “Barafu” means ice in Swahili, and the camp feels like the edge of the world. Positioned directly below the summit glaciers, an early dinner is served to allow for maximum rest. Guides conduct a final briefing, checking gear and health. This is a time for mental preparation. At high altitude, resting is crucial even if sleep is elusive. The atmosphere is filled with anticipation as the peak awaits. Around midnight, hot tea and biscuits are served to begin the final, glorious stage of the journey to the Roof of Africa.
• Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
• Distance: 4km
• Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
• Environment: Alpine Desert
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m down to 3,100m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The most rewarding day begins at midnight. Under the stars, the climb through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim begins. This is mentally demanding, but the rhythmic “Pole Pole” pace leads upward. As the sun rises, the rim is reached for the final walk to Uhuru Peak. Standing at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa is achieved! The feeling of accomplishment is indescribable. After celebrating and taking photos, the long descent back to Barafu for a short rest and brunch begins. The journey continues down to Mweka Camp, located back in the forest zone. The air feels rich with oxygen as the descent continues, bringing a sense of revitalization. Tonight, a deep sleep awaits, knowing the Roof of Africa has been conquered. It is a day of true triumph and endurance.
• Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m down to 3,100m
• Distance: 15km
• Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
• Environment: Arctic / Forest
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m) Celebration and Final Descent
Kilimanjaro National Park - On the final morning, the sounds of the tropical forest awaken the team. After a celebratory breakfast with the team—including the famous Kilimanjaro songs performed by the porters—the final descent to Mweka Gate begins. The path is a gentle downhill walk through the lush rainforest, providing a great opportunity to reflect on the achievement. At the gate, sign out and receive the official gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak. This is a time for farewells to the mountain crew, who have become like family. A vehicle will be waiting to transport back to the hotel in Arusha for a well-deserved hot shower and celebration dinner. The mountain is left with life-long memories and a new perspective on what can be achieved. The Tanzanian adventure has reached its peak, literally!
