Ascending Kilimanjaro: A Journey Through the Lemosho Route

As a wildlife photographer with a passion for Africa, I couldn’t resist the call of Kilimanjaro. Join me as I recount my unforgettable journey on the Lemosho route, where breathtaking landscapes and an incredible team made every step a shared triumph.

The Call of Kilimanjaro

As a wildlife photographer with a deep love for Africa, the idea of climbing Kilimanjaro had always been a distant dream. The thought of standing atop the highest peak on the continent, surrounded by the vastness of the African sky, was a call I could no longer ignore. So, when the opportunity arose to join a group on the Lemosho route, I seized it with both hands. The journey began with a warm welcome at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where our guides greeted us with genuine smiles and a sense of camaraderie that would only grow stronger over the next eight days.

The Lemosho route is renowned for its stunning landscapes, and it did not disappoint. We started our trek through lush rainforests, where the air was thick with the scent of earth and life. Monkeys chattered in the trees above, and the vibrant greenery was a feast for the eyes. As we ascended, the rainforest gave way to moorlands, a dramatic landscape of rolling hills and volcanic rock formations. Each step brought us closer to the arctic summit, and with every change in scenery, I felt a deeper connection to the land.

The Heart of the Journey

What truly set this adventure apart was the incredible team that supported us every step of the way. Our guides were exceptional, their knowledge of the mountain and its challenges was matched only by their warmth and humor. They set a pace that allowed us to acclimatize properly, ensuring our safety and comfort as we climbed higher. Their encouragement was a constant source of strength, especially when the altitude began to take its toll.

The porters, too, were nothing short of amazing. Their resilience and kindness were evident in every interaction, and their ability to carry heavy loads with a smile was inspiring. Each evening, we arrived at camp to find our tents set up and a hot meal waiting for us. The soups, in particular, were a highlight—delicious and comforting at 4,000 meters. It was these small acts of care that made us feel like more than just clients; we were part of a family, united by a shared goal.

Reaching the Summit

Summit night was the most challenging part of the journey. We set off in the dark, the cold biting at our fingers and toes as we made our way up the steep path. The guides were our lifeline, their quiet strength guiding us through the toughest moments. As the first light of dawn broke over the glaciers, I felt a surge of emotion that is difficult to put into words. Exhaustion, triumph, and awe mingled together as we reached Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa.

Standing there, with the world spread out below me, I understood why this climb is considered a transformative experience. It wasn’t just about reaching the summit; it was about the journey and the people who made it unforgettable. The Lemosho route offered both beauty and a strong chance of success, and the team that guided us made every step of the way feel like a shared triumph. If you’re considering climbing Kilimanjaro, I can’t recommend this route and this team enough. It’s an adventure that will stay with you long after you’ve returned to the plains below.
