Kibo Slopes/Rombo Cave
Kilimanjaro National Park - Transfer from Kibo Slopes Camp to Rongai Gate. The climb starts at Nale Moru village (1950 meters), passing through cultivated land and entering the pine forest. Look out for Kilimanjaro Colobus monkeys with their distinctive white-fringed capes and tails in the treetops. The first camp is reached in 3-4 hours at the edge of the moorland zone, where the forest begins to thin out at First Cave at 8500ft/2600m. Overnight at 1st Cave Camp.
Rombo Cave / Kikelewa
Kilimanjaro National Park - Trek to the Second Cave for lunch, then continue to Kikelewa Cave on the Mawenzi Trail at 3800m (7 hours). The morning walk is a steady ascent to Second Cave at 11300ft/3450m, offering stunning views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields on the crater rim. Continue to Third Cave at 12800ft/3800m for an overnight camp. Overnight at 3rd Cave Camp.
Kikelewa/Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Trek to Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4330m (3 hours). Continue ascending on the east side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, taking 4 to 5 hours to reach Kibo Hut at 15000ft/4700m. Spend the rest of the day resting in preparation for the final ascent, which begins around midnight. Overnight at Kibo Camp.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp/ School Hut to Uhuru
Kilimanjaro National Park - Cross the saddle to School Hut at 4800m (5 hours). Start early for the summit on steep, heavy scree to reach Gilman’s Point at 18640ft/5681m in time for sunrise. Those wishing to reach Africa’s highest point can take a three-hour excursion to Uhuru Peak at 19340/5895m, passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still cover much of the summit area. The descent to Kibo is surprisingly quick, and after some refreshment, continue descending to reach the final campsite at Horombo at 12000ft/3700m, taking 11 to 15 hours. Overnight at Horombo Camp.
School Hut to Uhuru /Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp or Mandara
Kilimanjaro National Park - Proceed to Uhuru Peak and descend to Mweka Camp. (14 hours) A steady descent through the moorland to Mandara Hut, then downward through the lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1830m), taking 5 to 7 hours. Be met and transferred to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay at Buffalo Hotel.
Mweka Camp or Mandara/Arusha /Nairobi
Arusha - Descend to Mweka Gate and transfer to Arusha (4 hours), or transfer to Nairobi. Overnight at Impala Hotel Arusha or Boulevard Hotel Nairobi, or a similar establishment.
