Big Tree Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - Today involves covering significant ground, trekking across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations. The journey passes through Shira 1 Camp, offering views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds, as the trek continues to Shira 2. The route gains considerable altitude towards Shira 1, with some steep sections. Approaching Shira 2, trekkers can view the Northern Ice fields from the mountain’s western side, with unique perspectives of Kibo. The steady climb across the Shira Plateau moorland aids acclimatization, offering stunning panoramic views.
Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The trek begins with an ascent offering expansive panoramic views, entering the upland desert climatic zone and traversing lava ridges beneath the Western Breach glaciers. The distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m) marks the day’s high point, an ideal lunch spot. In the afternoon, a steep descent leads to the night’s camp at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs with extensive views of the plains below.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The day starts with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine, followed by a steep climb up the Great Barranco Wall, separating trekkers from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. The climb involves rock scrambling, which is not technical but can be long and tiring. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the route leads to the Karanga Valley. From there, a steep ascent reaches the night’s camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong, a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek to around 4200m is available before returning to camp for the night.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - After a restful night and breakfast, the journey continues to Barafu Camp at 4640m. The climb traverses desolate scree slopes devoid of vegetation. The steep ascent is challenging, intensified by the altitude. Upon arrival at camp, trekkers eat and rest in preparation for the demanding night and day ahead. Staying hydrated and warm is crucial. An early dinner is followed by rest, as the climb to the summit begins between 11 pm and 12 am.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak & Down to Millennium Camp
Mount Kilimanjaro - The ascent begins around midnight, climbing steeply towards the summit glaciers. The climb involves 4 to 5 hours on scree, gaining significant height over a short distance, with spectacular views. The crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) is reached as the sun rises, offering breathtaking views of ice cliffs and the jagged Mawenzi peak. An additional hour’s walk leads to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). The descent retraces steps to Stella Point, then continues down the scree slope and track to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before heading to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate
Mount Kilimanjaro - A gentle trek descends through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed and certificates are awarded, a proud memento of the achievement. Vehicles then transport guests back to the hotel in Moshi, where a warm, welcoming shower awaits.

The Lemosho Route is widely considered to be the best route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Not too long ago, there were only two main routes used to climb Kilimanjaro
- the Marangu (Coca Cola) route and the Machame (Whiskey) route. Lemosho, a relatively new route, is preferred by reputable operators due to its beauty, remoteness and success rate. In short, it maximizes the chances that a climber will reach the summit, and enjoy the experience overall. The Lemosho route can be done in as little as six days (five nights) on the mountain.
However, it is ideally tackled over eight days (seven nights) for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Londorossi Gate, located in the western base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads across the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles.
