Arrival
Kilimanjaro Region - Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our professional team will warmly welcome you to Tanzania and transport you to your hotel in either the Kilimanjaro or Arusha region. This marks the beginning of your journey to the “Roof of Africa” and your Tanzanian adventure. After checking into your hotel and enjoying a brief rest, you will receive a pre-trek briefing from our experienced guide. This session will cover the itinerary, safety protocols, and tips for a successful Kilimanjaro summit, as well as a gear check and what to expect on the trek. For hotel bookings, our operators can recommend accommodations conveniently located near your destination and can arrange your stay before and after the trek.
HIGH-ALTITUDE DROP OFF DESTINATIONS AND TREKKING TO MTI MKUBWA CAMP (2,780m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Our guide and mountain support crew will meet you at the hotel for introductions and another briefing. You will then be driven from your hotel to the Lendorosi Gate (2,200m). After a quick registration with the rescue service and obtaining a permit, the trek begins with an easy walk through the lush rainforest. The trail winds through this vibrant ecosystem, offering opportunities to spot monkeys, birds, and occasional exotic plants (not guaranteed). The cool, refreshing air and rich greenery will enhance your experience. Upon reaching camp, our professional mountain crew will set up everything necessary, including tents and dinner preparation. Due to a reduction in your waking breathing pattern, your body receives less oxygen than during the day. Pay attention to your body and inform your guide if you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness.
Elevation change to Mti Mkubwa (2,650m/8,700ft).
Distance to camp: 6km/4 miles
Hiking time: 3-4 hours.
TREKKING FROM MTI MKUBWA CAMP (2,780m) TO SHIRA 2 CAMP (3,850m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you’ll leave the rainforest behind as you ascend through an open landscape of grasses, wildflowers, and striking volcanic rock formations, entering the Moorland zone. This trek is not difficult, allowing you to enjoy spectacular views of Africa and the surrounding areas. Upon reaching camp, you’ll be greeted by the cooler air of the alpine zone and a panoramic view of the majestic Shira plateau. Shira 2 camp is the best place on the trip to see Mount Meru (the fifth highest peak in Africa). Along the way, you’ll have the chance to learn about local Tanzanian culture with your guides through storytelling and Tanzanian songs to keep you motivated to continue hiking Kilimanjaro. Lunch will be provided on the way, and upon arrival, our experienced mountain crew will prepare the camp and a warm dinner.
Distance covered: 16km/8 miles
Hiking time: 7-8 hours
TREKKING FROM SHIRA 2 CAMP (3,850m) TO THE LAVA TOWER AND DESCENT TO BARRANCO CAMP (3,960m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, you will leave Shira 2 camp (3,900m) and embark on one of the most scenic days of the trek. The day begins by crossing the Shira plateau, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and the towering Kilimanjaro glaciers in the distance. As you climb higher, you will reach the Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive rock formation with awe-inspiring views. From here, the trail descends to Barranco camp (3,960m), aiding acclimatization as you spend time at this slightly lower altitude before the summit push. If any participant feels unwell, the group may avoid passing the Lava Tower and adjust the route. Upon arrival at Barranco camp, our mountain crew will set up camp and welcome you with a hot dinner and overnight stay.
Hiking time: 7-8 hours
Distance covered: 11km/6 miles
TREKKING FROM BARRANCO CAMP (3,960m) TO KARANGA CAMP (4,035m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - It is recommended to leave camp early to avoid crowds from other groups. After an early breakfast on day 4, the trek focuses on tackling the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb through rocky sections and narrow paths. Rest assured, our guides are experts at setting an optimal pace for the group. As you ascend the wall, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s summit and continue toward Karanga camp (4,035m). The landscape is an alpine desert, with rocky terrain and striking mountain views. Once at camp, relax, enjoy a hot lunch, and savor the quiet atmosphere of this isolated site.
Distance covered: 5km/3 miles
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
TREKKING FROM KARANGA CAMP (4,035m) TO BARAFU CAMP (4,640m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - On day 5, after breakfast, you will trek from Karanga camp to Barafu camp, the final camp before your summit attempt. The trail is steep, but the views are breathtaking, with Kilimanjaro’s glaciers towering overhead. The hike to Barafu camp covers about 4km with an elevation gain of 605 meters. As you reach camp, excitement builds as you prepare for your summit ascent. At Barafu camp, you will rest and have an early dinner in preparation for your midnight departure toward Uhuru Peak the following day. This night at Barafu camp is filled with anticipation, as the final stretch to the summit looms large.
Distance covered: 4km/2.5 miles
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
BARAFU CAMP (4,640m) TO UHURU PEAK (5,895m/19,340ft) & DESCENT TO MWEKA CAMP (3,080m)
Mount Kilimanjaro - The culmination of your journey: Day 6 is the summit day, beginning at midnight as you ascend toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the “Roof of Africa.” The trail is challenging with steep sections, but the climb is relatively straightforward. The most challenging aspect is the high altitude, and for added safety, each pair of climbers will have a personal guide. After 6-8 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the summit, where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views and the immense satisfaction of standing at the highest point in Africa. After enjoying the summit, you will begin the descent through the alpine desert, arriving at Mweka camp to celebrate your achievement. Note that more than 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including broken limbs, falls, and toenail injuries, so please pay attention to your footing. Our guides will ensure your safety.
Distance covered: 12km/7.5 miles
Hiking time: 5-6 hours to the summit and 5-6 hours to Mweka camp.
DESCENT FROM MWEKA CAMP (3,080m) TO MWEKA GATE (1,640m) TO DRIVE TO YOUR HOTEL
Mount Kilimanjaro - On the final day of your trek, you will descend from Mweka camp to Mweka gate, where your Kilimanjaro journey officially concludes. The descent is gradual and takes you through the lush rainforest, filled with vibrant flora and fauna. Upon reaching Mweka gate, you will receive a certificate of achievement, recognizing your success in conquering Kilimanjaro. Afterward, you will be transferred back to your hotel for a celebratory meal and a chance to reflect on the incredible experience you have just completed.
Distance covered for descent: 10km/6 miles
Descent time: 3-4 hours
