Departure from Arusha/Moshi to Kilimanjaro Gate – Mandara Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - Embark on a brief drive from Moshi or Arusha town to the Kilimanjaro Park Gate (1,830 m.), located at the edge of Marangu, a charming village with numerous small coffee and banana farms. After completing the entrance procedures, the journey continues through a beautiful and untouched forest to reach the clearing where Mandara Hut (2,700 m.) is situated. Nearby, the volcanic remnants of Maundi Crater offer a delightful afternoon excursion. Alternatively, one can relax and appreciate the stunning forest. The area is rich in birdlife, and monkeys are frequently spotted. [3-5 hours walking to Mandara Hut]
Departure from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - The initial segment of the trek involves a steep climb through the forest, but the path soon transitions into grassy moorland. In clear weather, there are excellent views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The ascent continues steadily through the moorland zone, featuring giant heather and occasional groundsel stands, eventually reaching Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Sunrises and sunsets here are often breathtaking, with the site being close to the glaciated dome of Kibo, offering a true sense of being above the clouds. [4-6 hours walking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut]
Departure from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut via Desert Saddle
Kilimanjaro National Park - The climb progresses gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain shifts to scree, providing a tangible sense of high-altitude wilderness. Typically, Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) is reached by midday, located at the base of the crater wall, allowing the afternoon for relaxation and contemplation of the summit ascent. The rest of the day is dedicated to resting and eating in preparation for the final climb, followed by an early night. [4-5 hours walking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut]
Departure from Kibo Hut to Summit, and descent to Horombo Hut
Kilimanjaro National Park - The ascent begins by torchlight around 1 a.m. to reach Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The initial climb is steep over loose volcanic scree, but well-graded zig-zags and a slow, steady pace will lead to Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in approximately five or six hours. A rest is taken there to enjoy the sunrise. Those feeling strong can undertake the three-hour round trip along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), passing near the spectacular glaciers that still cover much of the summit area. The descent is surprisingly swift, returning to Horombo Hut for the night. [11-15 hours walking from Kibo Hut to Gillman’s Point]
Safari to Kilimanjaro Retrace through Forest
Kilimanjaro National Park - The journey retraces steps with a pleasant moorland walk to Mandara, followed by a delightful forest walk to the National Park gates, leading to Moshi or Arusha town. The lush greenery of the forest provides a striking contrast to the summit day, highlighting the diverse scenery of Kilimanjaro. [5-6 hours walking]
