Moshi - Marangu Gate (1700m) – Mandara Hut 2740m – (5,500ft to 9,000ft)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Following breakfast and a briefing, travel to Marangu village and continue to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (a 45-minute drive). Register at the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority offices and begin the ascent. Walk through the rainforest to reach Mandara Hut, situated at 9,000 ft / 2,740 m. A side trip to Maundi Crater offers a wonderful opportunity to view the surrounding area, including Northern Tanzania.
Mandara Hut (2,740m) – Horombo Hut (3700m) – (9,000ft to 12,100ft)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Start trekking to Horombo Hut around 8:30 a.m. after breakfast. After about an hour, exit the rainforest glades and follow an ascending path through the open moorlands to Horombo Hut. The views of the Kibo summit and Mawenzi are breathtaking and shine brightly on clear days. Giant lobelias and groundsels are commonly seen along the way. Horombo Hut is often used by climbers for acclimatization, with many spending an extra day here to increase their chances of successfully reaching the summit of Africa’s highest peak.
Horombo Hut (3700m) – Kibo Hut (4700m) – (12,100ft to 15,400ft)
Mount Kilimanjaro - After breakfast, the trek continues to the last watering point, crossing the saddle of Kilimanjaro between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The vegetation transitions from upper heartland to a desert-like landscape. At Kibo, enjoy dinner, take a nap, and prepare for the summit climb around 23:30.
Kibo Hut (4,750m/15,580ft) to Summit (5,895m/19,340ft) to Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft)
Mount Kilimanjaro - Elevation Gain: 1,145 meters, 3,760 feet
Elevation Loss: 2,175 meters, 7,140 feet
At midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The journey starts with a challenging five-hour hike to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Although considered the easiest of the three crater ascent paths, it remains very demanding. The first major rest stop, William’s Point, is at 5000 meters, approximately a two-hour hike from Kibo Hut. Continue for thirty minutes before tackling the rocky switchbacks leading to Gillman’s Point (5,681 meters). The hike from Gilman’s to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and relatively easy, but the altitude makes it long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes about two hours. Upon reaching Uhuru, capture photos with your guide and group at the peak before descending to Horombo Hut.
Horombo Hut (3,720m/12,200ft) to Marangu Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) - Moshi
Mount Kilimanjaro - The final stage passes through the heath and moor zone to Mandara Hut (2700m), where a warm lunch awaits. Soon, you will traverse the tropical rainforest again, and after a total of 6 hours of trekking, you will arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After bidding farewell to your mountain guides, a short transfer will take you back to your hotel in Moshi. There, you can enjoy a warm, relaxing shower and celebrate your achievement of reaching Kilimanjaro’s summit.

The Marangu Route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” stands out as the sole Kilimanjaro trail that offers hut accommodations instead of tents, featuring dormitory-style beds and basic amenities for enhanced comfort. It is also the shortest and most straightforward route to the summit, with a gentle and consistent climb that makes it accessible to even less experienced hikers. Trekkers are treated to a variety of landscapes, ranging from lush rainforest and open moorland to alpine desert and the icy summit zone of Uhuru Peak. With its rich history, vibrant atmosphere, and combination of comfort and scenic beauty, the Marangu Route remains one of the most iconic ways to experience Africa’s tallest mountain.
