Begin the day with an early departure from the vibrant and colorful Moshi, heading towards Marangu Gate, the gateway to the breathtaking Kilimanjaro. The drive takes just an hour, but the scenic views of the countryside, with its coffee and banana plantations and the charming Marangu village, will captivate you. Kilimanjaro stands majestically in the distance.
Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, registration will be completed to ensure everyone’s safety before the adventure begins. The trail starts narrow and ridged as it winds through the lush, misty rainforest, where trees are draped in moss. The canopy above is filled with birdsong and mysterious rustlings—perhaps a colobus monkey? You might also spot a mongoose scurrying by. Along the way, you’ll encounter hikers descending from the summit; be sure to give them a high five for their effort.
The hike to Mandara Hut takes approximately three hours. Take a break to rest and enjoy a delicious lunch at the Hut. Once refreshed, embark on the short but rewarding walk to the Maundi Crater. On a clear day, the views to the east over Taveta and to the northwest towards Mawenzi Peak are breathtaking. Remember to bring your camera! After soaking in the stunning scenery, you’ll hike back down to Marangu Gate, where a vehicle will be ready to take you back to Moshi, leaving you tired but happy. This Kilimanjaro day hike is accessible to most people, even those who may not be in peak physical condition.
