Moshi/Arusha – Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Following a picturesque drive from Moshi or Arusha, the journey reaches Londorossi Gate for registration with Kilimanjaro National Park. From there, the trip continues by vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead, marking the start of the trek. The path meanders through a lush, tropical rainforest teeming with birdlife and monkeys, especially the black-and-white colobus monkeys.
Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira 1 Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Departing the forest, the ascent continues steadily into the moorland zone. The trail opens up to breathtaking views, crossing streams and ridges as it leads onto the Shira Plateau—an ancient volcanic caldera. The shift in vegetation is striking, featuring giant heathers and unique flora.
Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - A more leisurely day that allows for acclimatization to the altitude. The route traverses the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most picturesque areas, offering views of Mount Meru in the distance. This is an ideal time to acclimate and conserve energy for the upcoming days.
Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The ascent continues gradually toward Lava Tower, a significant volcanic plug, serving as a crucial acclimatization point at 4,630m. After a rest and lunch at Lava Tower, the descent into the scenic Barranco Valley begins. This day follows the “climb high, sleep low” strategy, known to enhance acclimatization.
Barranco Camp – Barranco Wall – Karanga Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - One of the most unforgettable days on the mountain. After breakfast, the infamous Barranco Wall is tackled, a steep rock face requiring some light scrambling. Once at the top, stunning views of the southern glacier await. The trail then descends and ascends through valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.
Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - A brief yet challenging climb to Barafu Camp, the basecamp before the summit. The trail is dry and exposed, with high winds and thin air. After an early dinner, rest is taken in preparation for the summit push, which begins around midnight.
Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - The most challenging but rewarding day. The trek begins at midnight, ascending through the freezing arctic zone with headlamps under a starry sky. After reaching Stella Point (5,756m), the journey continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After photos and a brief rest, the descent back to Barafu for a quick break is followed by a continuation down to Mweka Camp, where the air is thicker and a well-earned sleep awaits.
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Drive to Moshi/Arusha
Kilimanjaro National Park - The final descent leads through lush rainforest, often slippery but beautiful. At Mweka Gate, a summit certificate is received, and farewells are bid to the mountain crew. A vehicle will be ready to transport you back to the hotel for a well-deserved shower, celebration, and rest.
