- Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park - A visit to Zanzibar’s Jozani Forest National Park offers an exploration of the lush, dense groundwater forest. This park is home to the rare red colobus monkey, a species unique to Zanzibar, providing a chance to observe these wild animals closely. Other wildlife in the park includes blue monkeys, elephant shrews, and bush babies. Visitors can then proceed to the mangrove area, where a bridge built by the conservation authority allows for wildlife observation without disturbing the habitat.
- Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral - The Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church, located in Stone Town (the historic part of Zanzibar City), stands on the site of Eastern Africa’s largest slave market. The altar is positioned where slaves were once whipped for sale. Black cobblestones among the benches serve as a reminder of the slave dungeons in the basement. Outside the Cathedral, a stone monument depicts four individuals chained by their necks, illustrating how slaves were presented to buyers.
Nearby, the Exhibition of the Slave Market of Eastern Africa offers an exhibition center with pictures, photographs, and historical information.
- The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe) - The Old Fort, also known as Ngome Kongwe or the Arab Fort, is a historic fortification in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s capital. As the oldest building and a key attraction in Stone Town, it is situated on the main seafront, next to the House of Wonders (the former Sultan’s palace) and facing the Forodhani Gardens.
The Old Fort is a major attraction in Stone Town, with its courtyard transformed into a cultural center featuring curio shops selling tourist items like tingatinga paintings. It also hosts an open-air amphitheater for live dance and music performances most evenings, a restaurant, and a tourist information desk. It serves as the main venue for significant events such as the Festival of the Dhow Countries (Zanzibar International Film Festival) and Sauti za Busara.
- Darajani Bazaar - Darajani Market, also known as Estella Market or informally as Mariketti Co., is the primary market in Stone Town, Zanzibar. Located on Darajani Road near the Anglican Christ Cathedral, the market’s main structure was built in 1904 by Bomanjee Maneckjee for Sultan Ali bin Hammoud and has since been extended and restored. It is a local market offering affordable spices, fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat, providing an authentic shopping experience.

The major buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and include monuments like the Old Fort, built on the site of an earlier Portuguese church; the House of Wonder, a large ceremonial palace built by Sultan Barghash; the Old Dispensary; St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Cathedral; and Christ Church Anglican Cathedral, marking the work of David Livingston in abolishing the slave trade. The Stone Town of Zanzibar is a fine example of the Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa. It maintains its urban fabric and townscape virtually intact and contains many fine buildings that reflect its unique culture.
