Tough but rewarding experience - We climbed up Kilimanjaro in June of 2025. The mountain is definitely tough, not because it requires technical skill, but because of the altitude. Our start date was also affected by our flight being delayed from the US causing our bags (needed for the climb) to arrive the next day. We decided to try to do the trek in 7 days instead of 8. Our guides from Zara were great, knowledgeable, and encouraging. Yesselemae and Jackson made sure we felt well enough on every day. I developed symptoms of altitude sickness on day 3 (likely because I was underhydrating) even though I took my acetazolomide religiously. I developed GI symptoms, and being a physician, opted for taking steroids and extra dose of Diamox to treat my symptoms. Yesse checked on us every evening with pulse oximtery. The pulse ox is notoriously inaccurate in cold climates (cold hands means less circulation) so we accepted saturation in the 80s. On day 4, I felt fine and for the rest of the climb, the guides would stop me often and force me to drink so that I would not develop dehydration again. We were lucky to have pretty decent weather and to attempt the summit push at midnight as planned. Even with all the best preparation, the guides telling me repeatedly to walk slowly, drink and take snacks, I developed cerebral edema (severe headache and nausea) at the summit. Yesse took one look at me, grabbed me by the side and said let's run down. He knew it was time to get me off elevation. We successfully ran down to base camp (scree sucks by the way) and my symptoms resolved within 45 minutes. I took a 3 hour nap and off we went towards the last camp. I was very happy to get off that rock! But I also left with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude towards my guides, porters and cooks. It was the most beautiful sunrise at the top and I will cherish it always. As far as the guides, I thought they were very caring and wanted my husband and me to succeed and get there safely. They work very hard and one can see how much they love and respect this mountain.

Brilliant trip, but maybe not in March - Fantastic trip. The team was so lovely, and helpful, and they worked HARD! There were loads of small things that weren't necessary but made the trip just a bit more comfortable, like warm water to wash in and popcorn mid afternoon at camp. We had no idea we'd have a whole tent to ourselves for eating and hanging out in. I have no idea how the cook produced such good meals on the side of a mountain. Downsides: the weather in March is borderline. We had one day of constant torrential rain and others where we left camp early to get in before the worst of it. There was a lot of time in the tent reading and playing cards, and not so many views of the mountain. We were super lucky on summit day to get clear views from the summit.

Kilimanjaro - Booked with Evertrek - very professional, friendly and helpful team. The actual trip was managed by Zara tours. Yessi and his whole team were very professional and friendly. They gave us the right level of information at the right time and looked after us very well. I felt very safe in their hands. The portering team were absolutely amazing, from the food they served to the water for washing. Thank you all for a fantastic experience.

Kilimanjaro Lemosho March 2026. - From start to finish my experience with EVERTREK was flawless. Transport from the airport, logistics to and from the mountain and every other part in between. Yesse and his whole team were brilliant, making my experience both personable and inclusive. During times where I felt that little bit more vulnerable and unsure, their positivity and professionalism shone through. I’d like to point out a few honourable mentions that made my experience one I’ll never forget. 1) Yesse - the captain of the ship - is just brilliant. His knowledge and professionalism really improved my experience tenfold. 2) Jackson - our assistant guide. This man got me to the summit without question. He helped me with my pack and reminded me why I started this adventure in the first place. An absolute warrior and someone I’ll never forget. 3) Dory - our trek lead. Fantastic personality and his knowledge of the mountain really shows. A true asset within the team. 4) Tohannes - our alarm clock, waiter, porter and all round nice guy. Works himself to the bone every day and again an incredible asset to the team. I’m so honoured to have shared this experience with Yesse and his team and they made a 20 year dream come true. I’ll be forever grateful for their ability to keep us fed, dry, clean, and most importantly - safe. Thank you guys and take care! “Benny”

Unsafe and Unacceptable Experience on Kilimanjaro - I would strongly caution anyone considering booking with Zara Tanzania Adventures. My experience was not just disappointing—it was dangerous. We paid for an 8 day Kilimanjaro climb, but were pushed aggressively from the very beginning with no regard for proper acclimatization. The most alarming decision was being pushed to summit on day 5, going from approximately 13,000 feet to 19,341 feet, completely skipping the planned acclimatization at 15,000 feet. This is not how responsible or standard Kilimanjaro expeditions are conducted, as most groups summit at night after proper acclimation. Each evening, our guide recorded pulse oximeter readings but altered the numbers, inflating them to appear better than they were. He also dismissed how we felt, asking for a rating from 0 to 10 and then overriding our answers with his own higher numbers. When I expressed concern around 16,000 feet that something was seriously wrong, I was told I “needed a stronger mind.” I have a strong mind. I stood on the summits of many mountains including Rainier and the Grand Teton. By 18,000 feet, I made the decision to turn around based on my own mountaineering experience. Instead of supporting that decision, I was told to drink Coke and keep going. I vomited and continued to deteriorate. Only then did he acknowledge my condition, stating my oxygen saturation had dropped to 50. Even after that, I was not immediately brought down. My oxygen levels remained critically low (around 64 at 15,000 feet), and it took intervention from my family and evacuation insurance company to force a descent. Due to earlier poor decisions, I was required to hike from 7 AM until 11 PM to reach safety at 10,000 feet. I had high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), a life threatening condition which was ignored. To make matters worse, during this medical emergency and descent, the guide pressured me repeatedly for a $700 tip—well above the company’s own stated guidelines—and even offered to take me to an ATM to withdraw more money. This experience was unsafe, unethical, and completely unacceptable. A guide’s responsibility is to prioritize safety above all else. In my case, I truly believe these decisions could have cost me my life. I cannot recommend this company under any circumstances.
