Day 1: Arusha – Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park - This park follows the Tarangire River and is primarily composed of low-lying hills on the Great Rift Valley floor. Its natural vegetation is mainly Acacia woodland and giant African Baobab trees, with extensive swamp areas in the south. During Tanzania’s dry season, both the river and the swamps attract a multitude of wild animals. Tarangire National Park is renowned for having some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. It is also home to three rare animal species – the Greater Kudu, the Fringed-eared Oryx, and a few Ashy Starlings. Lunch is enjoyed at a picnic spot, followed by a game drive until late evening, then a drive to the accommodation for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Tarangire Park – Serengeti Plains
Serengeti National Park - After breakfast, the journey continues towards Serengeti National Park, passing through the scenic high-lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands, the adventure descends into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its vast plains stretching as far as the eye can see. The route leads to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the park’s richest wildlife habitats, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a vital water source and attracts a diverse range of wildlife representative of the Serengeti’s species. Arrival is in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area - After breakfast, the journey continues towards Serengeti National Park, passing through the scenic high-lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands, the adventure descends into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its vast plains stretching as far as the eye can see.
Day 3: Serengeti Plains
Serengeti National Park - After breakfast, a game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit is planned, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, offering potential sightings of lions, Thomson gazelles, topis, ostriches, and cheetahs. The Visitor Centre near the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites is worth visiting after the morning’s game drive. This well-designed centre offers interesting wildlife displays and a gift shop selling information leaflets and maps of the area. The centre also has a shop for cold drinks and snacks, a picnic area, and an information trail around a nearby kopje. A relaxed picnic lunch will be enjoyed at the centre under the shade of giant acacia trees.
Serengeti National Park - In the afternoon, the Kopjes Circuit will be followed, which goes anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, usually attracting several lions and some impressively large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons, including lions, which often lie in wait for animals coming to drink.
Day 4: Serengeti Plains – Ngorongoro Crater
Serengeti National Park - On this day, a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti Plains can be booked (available at an additional cost by pre-arrangement). Floating silently above the awakening bush, while spotting wildlife and enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Africa, across rivers and over numerous small villages. If not interested in the hot air balloon, an early morning sunrise game drive is available. Afterward, return to the accommodation area for breakfast, followed by a game drive until lunchtime.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area - After lunch, the journey continues to Ngorongoro for an overnight stay. Along the way, there is an opportunity to experience the traditional Maasai lifestyle and gain insight into the cultural lives of these people in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha
Ngorongoro Conservation Area - After an early breakfast, the descent into the crater begins, offering a half-day safari tour to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro National Park hosts a vast variety of animals, including herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another major attraction of this picturesque national park is its dense population of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. A visit to Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, is planned. This lake is one of the main features of the crater, where a large number of flamingos, hippos, and other water birds can usually be seen. After lunch, the ascent from the crater begins, returning to Arusha or alternatively to Kilimanjaro airport.
