Mtskheta Ananuri Gudauri Kazbegi
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - Located in the historic town of Mtskheta, Georgia, northwest of Tbilisi, the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox masterpiece from the Early Middle Ages. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it is the second-largest church building in Georgia, following the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Jvari Church - Jvari Monastery, a sixth-century Georgian Orthodox monastery near Mtskheta, eastern Georgia, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. It stands on a rocky mountaintop at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. According to tradition, Saint Nino erected a large wooden cross here in the early 4th century, which reportedly performed miracles and attracted pilgrims from across the Caucasus. A small church was built over the cross remnants around 545, known as the “Small Church of Jvari.”
Zhinvali Reservoir - The Zhinvali Dam, a hydroelectric dam on the Aragvi River in the Caucasus Mountains in Zhinvali, Georgia, features two turbines with a total capacity of 130 MW. The reservoir is uniquely V-shaped, with a distinctive water color and stunning views.
Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble - Ananuri, a castle complex on the Aragvi River in Georgia, is about 45 miles (72 kilometers) from Tbilisi. Ruled by a feudal dynasty from the 13th century, the castle witnessed numerous battles. Within the complex are two churches: the older Church of the Virgin, dating from the first half of the 17th century, and the larger Church of the Mother of God (Ghvtismshobeli), built in 1689. The latter features richly decorated façades and remnants of frescoes, despite fire damage in the 18th century.
Russian Georgian Friendship Monument - This monument offers breathtaking views of the mountains and valley, with beautiful wall murals. Built in 1983 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk and the “ongoing friendship” between Georgia and Soviet Russia, the area offers activities like ballooning and paragliding.
Gergeti Trinity Church - Known as the Holy Trinity Church, this site is near the village of Gergeti in Georgia. Situated on the right bank of the Chkheri River, at an elevation of 2170 meters (7120 feet) under Mount Kazbegi, the church was constructed in the 14th century.
Gori and Uplistsikhe Caves
Stalin Museum - This museum, with its impressive design, offers a reverent homage to Stalin, a key figure of 20th-century history. Although it now references the purges, the Gulag, and his 1939 pact with Hitler, it remains largely unchanged since its opening in 1957. Outside, the Dzhugashvili family’s wood-and-mud-brick house, where Stalin lived for his first four years, is preserved.
Uplistsikhe Cave Town - Uplistsikhe, an ancient rock-hewn town in eastern Georgia, is located about 10 kilometers east of Gori, Shida Kartli. Built on a high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River, it features structures from the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages, showcasing a unique blend of rock-cut cultures from Anatolia and Iran, alongside pagan and Christian architecture.
